Easier and cheaper to find an A+ engine from an MG Metro turbo and fit the whole thing. Because of the extra torque, power and the difference in compression ratios you'll find that your pistons, head, carb etc won't cope in your existing engine.

Ref my last, if you're after extra clout, the best way to achieve that with an A series engine is to fit:-

better carbs (big SUs or Weber (s)) depends on fuel economy vs driveability vs power
better exhaust (freeflow)
have the head ported / freeflowed or fit a head with bigger valve gear (performance vs cost issues here)
performance air filter
electronic ignition and a better dizzy

I wouldn't go daft with the engine size if you want it to last - 1293 is better than the issues you'll get with a 1380cc.

This will get you far more go than a turbo mini, cost less and it'll be easier and therefore more fun to drive.

I have always found that the transmission is the real problem with very powerful Minis.
Almost all my raly retirements have been through transmission failure, the lates a lay shaft case-hardening problem on a new shaft after one event and before that failure of the transfer gear, which is now a straight-cut one (bloody noisy!). My engine is 1310cc with about 117 bhp at 6200 and a lot of torque.
Remember, although you can fit straight-cut gears, etc, the overall size of the box and the bearings is still the same as for a 34 bhp Mini 850 - now, there's a sobering thought.

No issues with my 1380 at all, I'm going to give that engine about 14PSI boost as well, it will be fine.

Agree with the gearbox sentiments, although a well built normal box is meant to be very good.
