No comment by me was ever intended to be anything other than humourous. It was not my intention to cause offence. However those people who take offence should also consider how their comments may be viewed by others and if they have caused offence they should apologise. When an apology is received for the comments about Richard Hammond, then I will be more than happy to issue a full apology in response. I would also imagine that Richard Hammonds family would be upset about the comments made, my best wishes and sympathy go out to them.

The above is a copy of an email that I have just sent to our glorious leader bow

It seems that certain people are able to make what many consider to be offensive comments, likely to upset family and friends of Richard Hammond, with no consequences.
Have a bit of a joke however, and certain people appear to get very upset indeed, funnily enough the same people who seem to think that it is acceptable to upset the family of an accident victim.

Am I the only one who has a problem with this?

With respect Andmole, there is good reasono for Ted to close the thread.

The person in question has previously delibrately misconstrued posts made on PH as death threats and within minutes alerted the worlds press and police indicating how evil we all are.

Ted has a business and livlihood to protect, and that's what he's doing

Don't get me wrong, I understand exactly why he's done it, and I agree with the decision. What I am complaining about is the environment in which he has been forced to make the decicision, something you have referred to in your post.

You're quite right - a sign of the times when the vocal minority ruin it for the rest of us.

At some point there will be a revolution, and people like that will be first lined up against the wall..

Oh god, what have I said?!?!

Whatever the rights or wrongs of the thread to which this is about, the quotes and their critique, we have to understand the wider situation.

I dont think this is a free speech issue, morever an issue where Ted had obviously had to make a difficult decision based on the best interests of Pistonheads as a whole.

If the person in question has in the past used the comments made about her as support for her own political aims then as well as keeping PH away from legal action, is it also in a wider sense making sure that our 'free speech' on here is used against us in a political sense to a much wider audience where our right to respond to the same audience is zero or extrememly limited. The outcome of this would merely be the promotion of issues which are almost without objection contrary to the huge majority of Pistonheads members.

Further to this lets keep the discussion to the issue as a whole rather than specifics which could be used in such action which would also cause this thread to be closed in the interests of the community as a whole.

It's an issue of size too.

Organisations with lots of resources can cause a small organisation like PH with limited resources an enormous amount of disruption. It becomes a personal matter rather than a business one.

nono Maybe this should again be open for discussion once this frankly ridiculous state of affairs has been dealt with?

I'm surprised, and disappointed, that my post got nuked.

Apologies Ted, I didn't think you would have drawn the line that far back, but you obviously did - lesson learned.

What I am really annoyed about is the double standard that seems to exist, yes we should be aware of causing offence, and if necessary take action/apologise. So should others!

Its not so much about double standards as reality.

It is much easier to preach from a 'moral high horse', and it is very difficult to argue with someone in the eyes of the public when every other sentence they come out with is 'think of the children'... Whether their statements are valid and based on scientific figures or not!
