Thinking of ordering this. What's the genral concensus? Reliably informed that this is second only to the PSE in aftersale mods....

Any views?

Had this done to my TT (original part from the OPC). There are two versions, one with (as far as I recall) 20% and one with 35% shorting. I took the 35% one and am loving it. Very precise and way nicer to shift. Also, I can not confirm the often read remarks about problems when the engine is still cold. Easy as pie. Enjoy !

Cheers,
Frank

where do you get this mod from is it OPC kit or is there a better (read cheaper) aftermarket solution? I presume its easy to fit?

Phil, I had mine done at and by the OPC with Porsche-parts (I have two left hands in mechanical things). From what I have read in other forums You can get the "B&M" shortshifter kit. I guess some search via Google will present answers as far as availability and price is concerned. On one US-forum there is also an explanatory PDF-file where one member describes exactly how to fit in that special shifter-replacement. Sorry I can't deliver the link right away. It was no use to me so I did not save or bookmark it.

I seem to recall Dazren posting on this a while back. There's one with plastic joints and one with ally or similar and one is much better than the other, unfortunately I'm not sure which is which. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong.

I fitted a B&M to my GT3 and although it makes the change far more notchy I think it's a great improvement on the stock item. It's also much stronger than the original which is made out of plastic. You can usually find them on EBay as well. The Porsche short shifter looks very much like it has been made for them by B&M, see on here www.carnewal.com. There is also a Manthey short shifter that JZ Machtech sell which is a very impressive(solid) bit of kit, but IIRC was pretty expensive.

Anyone with experience regarding the 997? I have read a review that was very positive. The gear shift on my car, however, is already in the standard mode a bit woody as far as the second gear is concerned. Not sure whether a short shifter will make it much worse...

Fitted 3 now all genuine porsche parts from the dealers and yes they have plastic bushes so what so does the original 1 only ever seen 1 bush crack at 59k on a GT2 and it was original shifter from factory and had been tracked almost every month....

fitted 1 non genuine 1 and it took alot of messing around adjusting all the settings...too much time wasted on that 1.

go for the porsche 1 there only about £239 plus fitting.

I know a number of GT3 and TT owners that have had the OEM Porsche shifter break around the plastic/nylon bushes. IMHO cheap part, not fit for purpose.

I have the same as ali bit as Daz but with short shift. After getting stuck waiting fro recovery for 3 hours and then having the bit badly done by an opc I decided it is well worth the cost.

Stu

They are great but it does very much depend on the kit you go with. I would like one, but it is tyre change month for me I am afraid. When enquiring at the tread level on the rear tyres my local garage said "three points"

I have heard good reviews about short shifts, but Magic Torch has one in his 996 and doesnt like it at all. Dont know what type he has fitted though

Hey Darren,
I've had the low down from my friend and he said that after the PSE, this is only other thing he'd upgrade on........

It's the Porsche Short Shift so I've got no reason to question the workmanship...as long as it doesn't have an oil seal on it.......! yikes

I'll see how I get on with it.

I think that this will be the last of my 'modifications'......save for hardwiring my origin B2 Solo through the fuse box.....so I can get rid of the leads and cables. Interestingly enough, the laser detector went off for the first time the other day and as I got to the top of the hill, I could see the van with his window open and the laser gun pointing out .....Got enough warning to slow down in time.

I know what you mean about tyres....i've got about 1K left in mine - heading for 4 x Michelin pilot sports - what about you?

Ditto. they are being fitted today and then we are of hooning down the Route Napolean in France next week so I will let you know how they "perform".

Having said that, originally I was very unimpressed with my Pirelli P Zeros (mainly due to tramlining) although I gave them a really good send off last weekend on an early morning raid thumbup and they performed brilliantly - although perhaps that was because it was dry and I have no tred left......

It's the Porsche one.

You know, the company that manufactured our cars?

Talking of interiors, I must get one of you g-force meters. When it started whipping me in the face I knew I was doing well.

Help yourself to a height related gag

Well it's in now, and I actually like it. It's a stiffer change then the standard fit, but that's because there's less leverage now (I presume the fulcrum heads south on the short shift) and also the height of the gear knob is lower.

It's taken a bit to get used to but now I really like it, as I'm now more direct and positive with the gear stick. A definite improvement. (it actually makes you more positive with the shift as a 3.2 driver.......I speak from experience.....although I know that there isn't a 915 'box behind the rear seats (thank goodness!))

I still don't feel like a racing driver though - think I may need flameproofs and a helmet for that........

Thanks for reporting back on this. Thinking of having it done but don't know whether to go Porsche or B&M. Any chance you can advise who fitted it and how much, (i.e. cost and fitting)?

Got a deal on mine, Stubbsy. Ended up paying just under 200 notes from friend of a friend and then a mechanic I know fitted it for 20 quid in under an hour. I'd definitely recommend it. The only two afetr market mods I have fitted to my P&J is the PSE (i never leave home without it - turned ON!) and the Short Shift. Both are OEM and I don't think I'd ever fit anything other than Porsche to my car - but then I may just be being over cautious.....

I have it on my 997, factory fitted. Very slick piece of kit...should be standard in a car like this and gives a very satisfying "rifle bolt" like shift. Highly recommended. Also my second gear does not feel "woody" at all with the short shift...its just slices through all the gears no problem. Maybe something you should get checked out.
