Sierras at Bathurst
Discussion
For any of the Brits interested in one of the great chapters of Australian Touring car racing and didnt already know:
In the days of Group A, some bright spark (and there arent many of those in Queensland) called Dick Johnson decided to run the "revolutionary" Sierra Cosworth in Australian Touring car racing under the Group A regulations.
The cars were so dominant in their second season ('88 I think) that after one race, he trucked them straight to a shopping centre near the team's base and put them on display, inviting anyone to come and see them to prove there was nothing illegal about them. Aussies have never been comfortable with Jap or European technology overcoming good 'ol V8 muscle.
I uncovered this gem on you-tube showing footage of some of Dick's cars at Bathurst over the years. In one of the opening shots you will see a grid that is made up almost entirely of Sierras. Even Brock campaigned one for while.

Aaah yes. That was '87 I think. It was the Texaco sponsored (some irony there!) Egenberger Sierras and they finished 1-2. Klaus Ludwig and you might be right about Steve Soper, Im not sure. Their disqualification lead to the 3rd place man being awarded the win. That man just happened to be driving a Commodore and that win just happened to be his 9th.
I must admit Im usually a fan of whoever wins on the track takes the glory but with illegal fuel (or suspension - *ahem*) - F**k 'em, let the records show another win to one Peter Geoffrey Brock.
