WMP not playing videos embedded in websites

[puggit]

Anyone help?

I can't seem to get Windows Media Player to play videos which are embedded in websites - it doesn't have a problem downloading and playing files via links.

WinXP Pro SP2
Tried WMP 10 and 11(beta)

Thanks

Has this always been the case or just recently happened?
If recent, installed anything recently that can play video's (WinAMP, VLC, etc)? If so check which files it's associated with and poke around in IE / Firefox's list of plug-ins and extensions and try disabling anything related to the new program.

If's suggest poking around regardless in this area to make sure nothing has been accidently uninstalled or disabled by something else.
