Can you take the heads of in situ?

As the title says, is it possable to take the heads off with the engine in situ? If it makes any difference its' a 4.2.

I seem to remember that it's an engine out job, but can someone please enlighten me as to why?

You need to get the front cover off, and generally speaking the large pulley won't clear the chassis with the engine in place, however I believe 'plasticman' has successfully managed this somehow, best drop him a line. You might be able to work it by undoing the main engine mounts and lifting the engine though.

Thanks Windsor, makes sense now, in fact it's bl**dy obvious when I think about it, oh and when its' been spelled out for me.

And to get the front cover off requires everything else to come off... To be honest, it is worth just whipping the engine out and getting it on a stand as it will make life so much easier, especially when various bolts etc are seized.
