Things to be done

Ok, just in from the garage and have drawn up a lost of things to be done on the wedge to get it ready for Le Mans / Le Surrey Run Next Year
1. Sort out electrical gremlins at the front of the car ( need to order a few meters of cable, spade connectors and heatshrink slieving)
2. Fit and tighten up the steering height adjuster. (Might just remove all together)
3. Fit Fan override switch
4. Sort out interior illumenation ( order up some small LED's to replace the bulbs and ageing fibre optics)
5. Obtain heater control cables (push / pull type)
6. Re-assemble dash
7. Sort out new door and roof seals
8. Replace broken driving lamp lense (spare is in the boot!)
9. Obtain new stainless or alloy header tanks. (thinking about a swirl pot too)
10. Get Car / Engine Serviced
11. Have engine setup correctly
12. Replace Radiator with Stainless one, plus all coolant hoses with nice new silicon ones.
13. Speak to Wedgie and get a plenum insulator fitted
14. Paint and polish Plenum
15. Purchase and fit new windscreen washer pump and delivery hose
Optional Items
16. Fit new Ingectors and have car setup on Rolling Road
17. Remove CD Player and fit new Sterio Head unit.
18. Buy and fit HiFi Amp and new speakers
19. Replace all bushes
20. Replace drop links with new Rosejointed ones
Long Term items
21. Replace Suspension
22. Replace exhaust manifolds with stainless items (ceramic coated)
23. Have Wheels re-furbished (possibly fit 16" wheels all around)

I can help on a couple of things, as I have just about finished restoring my 390SE.
Fan override switch isnt as difficult as it sounds. Dont bother wiring it up all the way to the otter switch on the rad: there is a relay that uses the otter switch signal to operate the cooling fan. You need to wire the switch so it earths the otter switch signal, as TVRs use earth switching, i.e. you complete the circuit by closng the path to earth...
The only bugger is that the relay you need to tap into can be anywhere on the relay board: mine certainly wasnt in the same place as it is on Steve Heath's car!! However, the fuse WAS in the "right place". So i buzzed the relay out from the fuse with a multimeter. Once you find the relay, you need to refer to Heathy's Wedge bible, and create a parallel earth connection (parallel with the otter switch), and put a rocker switch in there. Hence, when the relevant relay pin is earthed by either the otter switch or your override switch, the relay will fire up and the fan will come on.

One thing re. the fan: the standard wedge wiring turns the fan supply off with the key. I rewired my fan relay to have a permanent feed so that the fan runs on when the key is off. Also means you can leave the over-ride on and flatten the battery but what the hell...

I'd mount some new 10A+ relays in a waterproof box down in the nose, as close to the lights as possible. Bring a HEAVY feed direct from the battery to that box and use the existing lights wiring to switch the relays. This gets around having the lights supply going halfway round the car, through spindly cable, causing a large voltage drop. I can guarantee the lights will be brighter.
I noticed my name mentioned there... I can certainly supply a plenum insulator, in 6mm or 10mm. One or two people have criticised the fact that I don't get a CNC finish and/or don't need to use anything like as thick, but if it's good enough for the likes of JE it's good enough for me
Oh, and I charge less.
AND... you're getting a hand-made product, for a hand-made car.

Just thought I'd post my list of things to do. I've had the 350i six weeks now and have already got a few things out of the way. As with any schedule it's capable of being blown off course especially since my other half is drawing up her onw schedule for me!
Jobs done so far
1. Badly scratched drivers window replaced Sept 06
2. Targa top window seals replaced Oct 06
3. Targa Top mounting tab broken – a new tab was made out of steel and wood.Old one was cut out with a router and replacement was screwed and fibreglassed into place –Oct 06
Work in progress:
4. Re-veneer
Veneer is being replaced with satinwood which matches the colour of the steering wheel. I’m doing the glove box, dash and centre console so this will keep me occupied until the end of the month
Still to do:
5. Reversing switch need to be replaced in order that reversing lights can come on again. I’m going to have one more go at this from underneath before tackling it from inside the car.
6. Would like to replace dash bulbs with leds. With the dash out for veneering now’s the time to do it but there are no screws visible in the metal instrument plate so it looks as though I’ll have to tackle it from behind. This looks to be easier said than done!
7. Grease speedo cable. This wanders around all over the place at low speeds so I’m going to get the drive shaft out of it’s sheath and give it a good greasing. Same difficulty as for number 6 on my list!
8.. Winter project: Wire brush and hammerite outriggers on both sides. The rest of the chassis is pretty good. I’m taking a week off work for this one!
9. Longer term: a respray to get rid of the numerous stone chips that have accumulated over the last 21 years. I'm saving my pennies up for this one!
I have to say that this forum has been invaluable in getting the info ( and sometimes the confidence) necessary for tackling some of these jobs. Ploughing a router into a recently recovered targs top was a case in point! What's everyone else up to over the next few months?

The best thing about doing all this has been the pleasure of the work not mention the bundle saved in doing 95% of the work myself.

Still working on my bloody clutch. Got the broken clutch lever out via an additional 'access' hole that I made last weekend (see other thread). But installing the replacement is more of 'a lot of error with sometimes a trial'. And I didn't succeed yet after 4 hours of trying. And this keeps me of even thinking of my old to do list...
So I envy people working on the cosmetics of their wedge, as you probably can understand.

But installing the replacement is more of 'a lot of error with sometimes a trial'. And I didn't succeed yet after 4 hours of trying. And this keeps me of even thinking of my old to do list...

Keep at it every one, ive just done the heads lights today, one of the pivot bolts ratled out so i desided to remove both sides and clean up and put back togeather.
All working fine now.
Just wait until the end of the month when it gets its winter over hall.... lots to be doing and its only little old me doing it... hoo well
