Going thru 30 zone at 30 ish (cant always be looking at speedo when there are folk about) nears end, then speeds up approaching 60 zone. Officer just on border standing with tripod mounted device complete with his helmet on! Letter thru post within days saying I was doing 44 in 30 bla bla. Really dont think I was but ,like I said, people around etc.
Thing is, wasnt pulled over and he was wearing his helmet....anyone any similar experience?

Yes, and lost in court though.

laser devices and their accuracy is like opening Pandoras Box on here, I suggest you look at the thread 'LTI2020 Strikes Again - At me' for someone who is currently fighting a case.

There is this document:

www.acpo.police.uk/asp/policies/Data/RPET%20Manual%20version%202-3.pdf

Which will tell you how the device should have been used.

Whether you want to fight the case it will most likely be on principle or the financial cost of your insurance increase or loss of licence rather than the £60 as the amount of time you will need to put into fighting the case you could have earnt the £60 many times over.

Why didn't you wait until you got to the higher speed limit sign before speeding up ?
(That's what you are supposed to do.)
You don't need to look at the speedo for that, you just refrain from pressing the right pedal any harder until you get to that point.

Typical.. they always near the lolly sign as they know people see them und start to increase speeds towards them.. rolleyes

Was the tripod within the 30 mph zone - before the lolly? Or positioned in the higher speed zone? If the latter = very naughty - as they know you would observe the sign first und not realise they were pinging at drivers seeing the sign und subconciously hitting the throttle as message from eyes gets to brain gets to foot rolleyes

But this sort of behaviour reinforces that ist nothing to do with safetybut all to do with revenue und a business plan rolleyes

An open invitation to insanojackson and vonhosen to join the real world at your convenience.

To the OP, the only comment I can offer is, on the basis that what comes around goes around, said helmetted waste of skin will get his, one day.
Sympathies my friend.

Normally the end of 30 sign is a short way past the last house of a residential area. I can understand the temptation to put your foot down before you reach it, but those last houses have as much right to considerate driving as the rest. If you’re like me you’ve probably got into a habit of speeding up too early in which case we have to put some effort into acquiring a new habit. In some cases of course the signs just make no sense.

Except in Oxfordshire, where you can't even see the nearest houses when the 30 limit starts banghead

I don't think you have much of a chance I am afraid unless you argue the LTI points.. Until you hit the national it is still a 30, and whilst they said they weren't going to place tax traps near national limit changes they also said these things were for safety, so lies lies lies, the mantra of Nu Laba.

As I said, some of them make no sense. In these cases I think we should write politely to the local authority and ask for them to reviewed, amended or explained. We might find they have reasons that are not immediately obvious or they might confirm our general opinion of them, or they might act.

Do officers need to wear high vis jackets/coats when scamming?

Are local friendly tax collectors have taken to standing on the corner by the police station without one. Looks just like someone waiting for a bus!

If he was standing by the sign, then it is entrapment. It's legal, but immoral.

Not in my experience, usually several hundred yards past.

Sorrry, I'm guilty of loose use of terminology (was on a conference call). I was trying to get across that it's pretty shabby to get people who speed up just before the sign.

That depends if the location is still residential doesn't it? Obviously you can say the police are sneaky because they know that people accelerate before they get to the sign so they'll catch more people, but if it's still residential at that point then the early accelerators are not driving with consideration for the people who live near the sign.

it's a change to a 60 zone. It won't be residential.

In the real world if you speed up before the change in limit, you run the risk of prosecution (as the OPs post aptly demonstrates).

..but Von', the OP may well not have been doing anything like 44mph, as we all know the LTI to be a fantastically dubious device capable of very odd readings - perhaps you're right, but I think in many cases we know damn well that the LTI speed reading isn't worth the paper it's written on, is it??
