Well guys, sorry to gate-crash this forum - I'm usually on the TVR Wedge forum...

I currently have a Beemer 330ci Clubsport and a TVR 400se. I am looking at selling both cars which gives me about £23k for a new "toy". I have looked at the various options and my shortlist is a Porsche 996 aged about 1998 or a Lexus LS430 (sorry for swearing) hehe

Obviously I'm on the Porsche forum and opinions will be somewhat biast but will be very welcomed all the same.

Am I jumping into a minefield only spending £23k on a 996 carrera 2? Ideally I'm after a 1998 model with about 60k miles, heated seats, cruise control, 18" rims, and the updated light lenses. Colour is not too important just wouldn't consider greem and I'm not too keen on the all red or all green interiors either...

As you might have guessed, I'm still in 2 minds about it. I prefer the looks of the Porsche. Also, the running costs (fuel and depreciation) weill be MUCH better on the Porsche. However I do prefer the Lexus to drive and I would have a boot big enough to fit the golf clubs paperbag

What are your thoughts please guys? Anything I should look out for in particular?
Whats the cabriolet like compared with the coupe as I still haven't made my mind up here either...

Cheers in advance,
L33.

Buy a Boxster S, youll get a good low milage example for that money and you can fit your clubs in the boot! The downside is only 2 seats and you will have to take the stick that comes with owning a Boxster !

I did contemplate the Boxster but really need the 4 seats. Not that the rear seats are of much use anyway...
Cheers,

£23k might be a bit low for a 996, especially a cab.

If you're looking for a 300bhp sports car in that price range, you may want to consider an Alpina Roadster S. The Z4M will push down prices on them, and it's comparable in terms of performance.

Nowt wrong with Lexus - i had one for 4 years before the 911... damn good cars!

And no - i spent close to your budget on a 996 - you'll end up with an early '98 with 80k+ on the clock, but buy on condition and you'll be fine!

Cheers. Do you worry about parking it? i.e. returning to find some to55er has put a key down the side of it out of jealousy? Do you worry someone might like it more than you and steal it? There are my 2 main worries....

yup, I do worry about that a bit which is why I've got the Almera to drive into the seedier parts of Royal Leamington Spa. To be honest though if the worst happens that's what insurance is for. You only live once!

I leave mine in town when I go shopping, in a industrial estate which a busy footpath runs through for the chavs to get from their town houses to town, never had an issue other then one night outside my G/F's parents house somone stole the 911 numbers of the back but did it in a caring way as not to scratch the paint work, which was nice.

at first I was a little wary but at the end of the day its a car, if you cant leave it without worrying then dont buy one.

in saying that I was thinking of getting a f355, and im sure that would be a special occasions only car, using somthing else to leave in town.

I had a BM 325i Coupe Sport before getting my 996 C2 at end of June. Loved the Beemer but for the driving expereince there's just no compparison to the Porsche. Mine's a tin-top as I've never fancied any sort of rag-top.
Your budget may be a little bit low for the year and mileage you're after. £25-£26K should get you a decent coupe, cabrio a little more.
I personally wouldn't bother with the heated seats and cruise control. Had the latter on the BM but don't really miss it. 18" rims a must though IMO.
In conclusion - go for the Porsche I say !

I have a '99 996 and have no problems with the golf clubs. I decided to get a cheapo golf bag cover to avoid muddying up the back of the car but there is more than enough room once you put the seats down. I only have a carry bag but I wouldn't expect any problems putting a cart bag and trolley in there.

I moved from a 328ci back in June and still have a double-take to believe that I have a 911. And is it a bit childish to still get a thrill from seeing the spoiler come up at 75mph?

Nope, even though the aero kit attracts a bit more attention. There are places I wouldn't leave it though.

It's got additional security and is locked-up every night. There's another 996 and a 997 left out on the road, never seen any trouble. Suppose it comes down to where you live.

Have to drive through some rough areas on the way out the city, never had any trouble, people shouting approval.

Mines a late 98, with 73k miles. Looked at some much younger cars, mine was the best I saw.

It's also up for sale as soon it's back from Monaco...

The one thing you DO have to watch out for is car park rash ... The 996 door panels have a special magnetised surface that attracts door dings , you have to be careful where you leave it when in supermarket / mall carparks , unless you're an avid door-dent collector.

Lee,

I've just done the same thing as you. TVR - BM Coupe - 996 (Cab). I was looking for 10 months half heartedly and then 2 months actually seeing them in the flesh. I didn't know about Coupe or Cab but as they say go and see lots drive even more and buy the one you love. No regrets for me. I use it every day including school runs and if easy on the gas you can get 25-27 mpg but you'll want to dive it into the 20 mpg arena.

Sports exhaust next me think. Roof down in a tunnel.
