Hi guys...
I have a bit of a rattling noise in the engine bay at idle.. I think its time for a new cam etc etc.
I'm sure alot of people have had this done... roughly how much will it cost for the basic replace but also - whats the best cam to replace it with for a performance increase and other tweaks to be done while its being done that aren't toooo costly???!!!
I'm in the Bristol area...
thanks in advance

First of all have another listen and check it is not a split manifold or the belt tensioner bearing rattling. If it is cam, and you are going to employ someone to do it, explain EXACLY what you want done. Some “experts” will try to convince you that an upgraded cam, and while you are at, different injectors, oh and a some induction mods would be a good idea. You could then end up with a slightly more powerful but undriveable car and an empty wallet.
Ballpark, you would be looking at around £1000 supplied and fitted. Around half that will be labour. The price'll go up or down depending what cam you go for, labour rates etc but that's a starting guide. If you change the spec of the cam you would be advised to get the fuel map updated to suit. That could cost anything from a couple of hundred up to several times that depending where you are starting from.

The voice of experience, listen to this man

"a bit of a rattling noise in the engine bay" doesn't sound like a worm cam to me. I just had a worn cam replaced this month (one lobe missing the important part of the profile) in my 450 and "a bit of a rattling noise" it wasn't. I would take this to Racing Green
(or another specialist) and have them diagnose it.

Its certainly not exhaust related. I had the gaskets done a few months ago and its not the same sort of noise at all. Had that on my old TVR aswell so I'm used to that noise. Its only on idle you can hear it and I think only when hot...
cheers for all the suggestions so far...
'lost' rocker pad?cheers for all the suggestions so far...

Out of interest, what symptoms did you have. Mine is suspect (will find out what's wrong next week), also a 1999 450 (with 29,000 miles)

A worn cam? Or a worm can?

My first Chim, '97 4.0HC had a loud ticking noise at 2 years old and 14K miles, no mistaking the noise, consistant and rising with engine speed = rocker pad in this case
had a warrantee at the time so never saw the bill

very difficult to describe, more of a vibration/buzz that was particularly noticeable above 3k revs. No loss of power was evident but this had probably declined gradually. However I really noticed the difference when the cam had been replaced - so quiet and power gain was surprising, but not if you reckon on 1/8 cylinders previously contributing nothing more than a silent fart

Something from my subconscious in my typo!!

If I do need a cam...which should I go for?????
V8Developments Kent H404, MC2 or MC1.. I dont use it everyday but will need to get through a little traffic at times- dont we all!

I had the MC1... as smooth as the proverbial infants arse...
They fitted an MC1 into Bluebottle's and an MC2 into mine (both Griff 500s). If smoothness is a concern, go with the MC1. The MC2 will rev more freely (I should think) but to be honest, they're all pretty quick.
The cheapest option will be to have a straight replacement which I reckon is a good choice too.
The good thing is you're taking it to a place where you will get good advice and the work will be excellent.
