Anyone know what the wiper linkage gubbins comprises and how you get at it on a 97 Chim?

I think there must be some sort of geared bevel drive or similar in there that's stripped on mine. My left and right wipers get 'out of synch'...I started off thinking one or both of the arms must be loose on the spindles but they're not and the spindles can be seen getting out of synch too. In the bible, it mentions that access is behind the perforated grill under the screen....well, not on mine. Removal of the grill would just get me to a panel that seems to be integral with the car-body. Got a horrible feeling it's a dash out job???

Also, I'm assuming the wiper motor box can be removed by undoing the clamp and the brass nut on the drive output? Only mine doesn't seem to want to part despite the nut being off the threads?

Invented a few new oaths and curses dedicated solely to TVR this afternoon

Usually, the drive cable is terminated in a steel block that fits over a pin on the drive gear. Because the cable is being held by the gears on the spindles, it won't allow you to pull the gearbox away. You may find if you take the wiper arms off, the spindles will be free to rotate and the gearbox will pull the drive cable out as well.

But I don't know for certain, it is a TVR...

I've just had my wiper motor apart to repack it with grease. If you remove the clamp and gently pull the motor body towards you,at the same time as manually moving the wiper arms, you'll end up with enough clearance to remove the top cover on the motor.Once this is off,you can remove the circlip holding the shaft to the gearwheel as wedg1e said.

Remove dash, cut hole in bulk head. Actually described with piccies in bible 2.

If they are going out of sync, usually stripped gears in the wheel box or splines on the wiper spindle.

Steve, by 'wheel box' do you mean the motor and stuff that is accessible or is this what's behind the dash? Do I detect a glimmer of hope that the problem might be curable without calling in a gyneacologist with a saw?

The wheel box is the bit that is directly behind the wiper spindle. If the wiper motor fails this tends to affect both wipers. If one wiper is getting confused then the problem is usually with the wheel box and or rack that drives it.
