Hi.

About to do the right thing (depending on your thoughts), or:

About to do the wrong thing (depending on your thoughts)!!

I'm about to sell my pride and joy Audi S4 Avant bi-turbo, and buy a 993 Carrera 2 non-varioram, 1995, which has got a lot of miles (119k) but a full history, and good new brakes, tyres, etc, etc.

The car is available to me cheap, hence the 119k miles is OK with me.

However, once in reverse the car gave a "clack clack" noise from the rear when reversing, and this made me worried.

The current owner has said it did it with him once, but never again...

Does anyone know if this is in any way normal, or worth worrying about?

Thanks,

Andrew Dryburgh.

I have no clue about the "clack" - mine has never done it (I don't think - Internet forums don't do noises very well ) but I strongly recommend a leak down test (and indeed PPI generally) before purchase.

Has it got an LSD fitted,,,may not be a problem at all, but good news to hear such a clacking.

Thanks guys...

No I agree, not easy to describe exactly the correct "clack" or "click" on here...

Mediators take not - we need sound file add ons here!

What's a leak test????

Ballcock,

Thanks for your reply...

So will that make a clack on full lock in reverse, but not in a straight line?

The car also has very low suspension...

Points to some track day use, you think?

It's a 993 C2, polar silver, grey leather, climate, roof, targa split rim wheels, new cross drilled brakes, new N2 Conti sport contact 2's, and a good looking car.

1995, full stamped history.

Much more refined than my last 911, a 3.2 Carrera, although curiously doesn't feel much quicker....

Cheers,

AD

Its a resonably simple engine health check - feed high pressure air at a known pressure into each cylinder and measure the pressure it will actually hold. Results are given in percentage loss terms for each cylinder: e.g. 5%, 10%, or in my case 70% eek

Could be the LSD I suppose, does it also make a weird "grumbling" noise just as it comes to a stop (going forwards)?

Yeah , that's when you'll hear it most I believe , on full lock while reversing . If it's been lowered , there could have been other fettling like an Lsd installed too , maybe?

Get the car jacked up at any two bit garage and they'll tell you if you have un or not in 10 seconds.

Congrats , by the way , sounds like you found a good one .

Thankfully I work for a 2 bit garage - Harper & Hebson in Carlisle (www.harperandhebson.com)

So I'll try to get it on a ramp...

Trouble is they'll look in the wrong end for the engine!!

So do you reckon if I can buy it for £16000 it's a good buy???

I thought so, when I took it as a trade in...

Well it has had the front end painted.

But what 100000 miles 911 won't?

I've ended up spending thousands on my S4 to make it correct...

And I must say, the S4 modded is miles faster than this 993... M3 quick...

So I'm in a mess trying to decide to do it or not.

Bottom line is as good as the S4 is, it's not a 911, and having had two before, I miss a 911.

My first one was a LHD import from USA SWB 912 4 cyl.
2nd MINT 3.2 Carrera with only 34000 miles...

And I don't want to fall foul of 'er indoors by buying a pig!!

You get me?

Good luck with your car you are trying to decide on.

Just pay the money for a fully comprehensive inspection of the car like sugessted before a full leak down test will give you a good idea of the overall mechanical condition of the vehicle dont be alarmed if the readings are as high as 15% leakage in my opinion that is ok for the mileage you say it has covered.

Get a full report and see what remidial work is required and at what cost as you probably know these cars are quite expensive to maintain.
