Petrol cap.......

Finally got around to buying a new petrol cap (old one pitted and corroded to hell). Having spent an amusing 30mins last Saturday trying to work out how to get the old one off the car - unscrewing the the four phillips head screws on the seating - they end up just turning without unscrewing and new I'm scratching my head.

Anyone done this one? Advice?

No advise I'm afraid, but where did you manage to get a new cap from? I was led to understand you couldn't get them any more?

TVR car parts in Devon. Least it seems the right size / shape etc etc and they promised it's suitable for an 'S.

The screws secure the casting to the body, you also have to release the hose to completely free it.

There are 10mm nut on the rear of the screws.these are normaly stuck together with glue and require a small headed spanner.i hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. Just one more dumb question - I had a look in the boot and counldn't see any obvious way of getting at the back of these screws - do you have to do it from underneath the car?

No, they're in the boot. Probably behind the carpet. Touch the outside of one of the screws with your left hand, stick your head in the boot and touch your right hand to the inside of the boot in the same place. Whatever you touch is in the way of you seeing the underside of those bolts.

Is the new fuel filler cap the same as the original? The photo doesn't show the latch.

If its like the one I got from them it is the chrome cap bit only (they did explain this when I ordered it, so no problem)
Apparently you have to grind off the four rivetted bits on your old one to remove the springy sealing bit and then fit it to the new cap (by hammering over the ends of the four legs, which are part of the new cap). Then drift out the roll pins from the old assembly to get the latch and base plate off and then assemble these onto the new cap.
Mind you, this is all theory because I have not fitted mine yet!!
