How FAT is a 993 'S'
Discussion
Im looking at 993's for my new weekend road toy, and I like the idea of 911's cos they are "compact" BUT i like the 18"'s and the big reds that you get on S's... Im just a little worried about its lardy arse.
How much wider is the rear than a standard? Has anyone had any problems with the extra width?
thanks

Well with the lardy arse rather than the narrowbody version you do lose a bit of top end speed - less aerodynamic of course.
That's hardly a hindrance in every day driving, and is more than made up for by the pleasure of regarding those voluptuous withers and having the big reds. They also hold their value well as you'll have noticed from the prices.

2S didn't get the big reds or 18's as standard, though lots have the 18's
4S got 18's and big reds
Wide body is only 2" wider than narrow body, adds 30kg to the overall weight.
I've had 2 wide body and 2 narrow body and from a driving perspective you don't notice the extra width as any kind of hindrance, a wide 993 is still a very compact car.

Ok now Im a little confused... im ok with them being only 2" wider.. I was looking for a C4 anyway so thats all ok... but am I dreaming or are 996's now in the same price band as 993's???
I know all about the RMS issue but you cant ignore a 996 at the same money as an equally miley 993... or can you??

It depends what floats you boat. 996 is a great car; faster, more refined and a better everyday proposition. I just prefer the looks, sound and quirkyness of the old air cooled beastie

When you think that a 996 C4S is only a few grand more than some of the asking prices for 993 C4S's , it does make you wonder... If you're new to realising this the only advice should be to take your time , find out more about the ups and downs of each model , decide if you're going to drive it every day , if you wish to have a Porsche warranty , and , most importantly , drive a few of each type before you dive in.

Note though, that when the 2S was specced with 18s, they were the lighter hollow spoke (turbo) ones. The 4S got solid spoke.
Thanks for the tips guys keep em coming!
This wont be my daily driver (Mk2 GTi does that) ... nor will it be my track toy ( something else from the porsche stable does that).
This is "just beacause"!! and to be honest i cant think of a better reason than that!!
From what I have read everyone says that a 996 MUST come with a a warranty and its something I havent heard sbout the 993. I do think that the 993 was the last "proper" 911 and it is only because I think that there is too much of an advancement over the 964 that Im not looking at those...
I think ist time to call my local dealers and go and have a bit of a play...

Ok next question... whats this Varioram thing? was it on all of the 993's or only after a certain date?
On the later ones (96 onward maybe?) and added 13 horses. Makes not much of a difference to anticipate your next question.
You notice it most in mid-range, it speaks louder than on-paper figures. I'd say, if you can drive both varioram and non-varioram and see what you think.
