After three years of Porsche ownership (996 for two years and my current 997 for about 14 months) the time has come to change to something else. Given a small child and a recent found passion for sailing I finally have to admit that I need something more practical. Don't worry though, once finances permit I plan to get myself a little weekend toy..

So, the big question is what the hell do you replace a 911 with? The replacement has to be:

- A genuine four seater with decent boot space
- Safe and built like a tank (will be carrying my child)
- Reliable (ie. most likely German..)
- Easy to drive as it will be an everyday commuter
- Easy to use/park in central London (ie. no SUVs)
- Not too flash so I can park/leave it without worrying too much

On top of all of that I'm a bit of a petrolhead so I'd like something that is a bit stylish and powerful for the occassional blast. And before you say it.. Before my 996 I had two M3s and don't fancy one again. Would be nice to save a bit of cash at the same time so looking to spend max £40k - £45k.

This is actually quite hard..!!

There's the obvious route of BMW M5/645i or Audi S6/RS4 but somehow I'm tempted towards a Merc CLK55 AMG. Pretty much fulfils all the criteria above and I think its a very stylish car. Also love the rarity factor (hardly ever see them) and the stealth factor. No doubt in a different league when it comes to pure handling but I'm sure that 5.5l V8 would keep me happy.

Seen a couple of 2004 examples with under 35k miles for under £40k from main dealers. This seems bloody cheap to me for the amount of car.

So, any thoughts/suggestions? What did people buy after a Pork? Any thoughts about a AMG Mercs?

Cheers

Save yourself some money, buy an E55 estate for £25k... put the remainder towards a 996 GT3

Was looking on the MB website and couldn't believe how cheap (its all relative) the E55s are. There are quite a few at around £35k. Weren't these over £65k+ new?? That's helluva chunk to lose on depreciation.

I'm still tempted by the coupe (CLK55) given that its a bit smaller, more stylish. The E class is a bit of a barge in London driving.

RS4 won't be big enough.

Having been looking around for a family car myself at the weekend I have basically narrowed it down to a 5 series.

I'm surprised you find the CLK stylish. For me it works for blue hair ladies but that's about it...

The best BMWs and Mercs tend to be nicer to drive than the Audis.

I'd go for a £25k 3 or 5 Series diesel Touring, and spend the rest on a Boxster S, or nice air-cooled 911.

Has to be a 535d & a trip to DMS yes

Either that or stretch the budget a 50k & get an M5.

hehe I'd doubt that, Porsches excepted of course.

Think it was a S8? If you're looking for 5 metres of car with an Audi badge on either end it might be worth considering. sleep

Only have room for one car (parked on the street) so the two car option is out.

Personal taste but I think the CLK55 is a fairly stylish (and understated) car. Doesn't shout too loud but will quite nicely see off 90% of cars on the road (at least in a straight line...). Only 30 so not sure if I'm quite old enough to go for an estate... somehow would make me feel too 'sensible'.

Only one car and you're in London? Did you ever see Richard Hammond's review of the AMG G55?

Must be out there somewhere on youtube or google video....

JEB, I do hope you're not getting rid of your pork because you got told off by the BiB....

I've no real experience of the uber saloons i think you're after but a collegue has a new M5 and a new RS4. He really rates the RS4 and thinks the M5 is a bit pony.

The new RS6 will have the Gallardo engine i think....

Hobo got it right - 535d M Sport Touring and a DMS remap. Haven't got round to the latter yet but quite happy with the car as a replacement for my 993.
