Looking at a 89 seven, 1.7 x-flow with twin 40's, but only has a 4 sped box?
How easy/difficult is a gearbox replacement?
Where can i get one from, can i use any old 5 spd ford box?
How much should i be looking at to spend on the box and labour etc...

Any help much appreciated....

Strange - ours is 1.7 x-flow, twin carbs with five speed box. Thought that was standard? (K reg)

Most xflows have Escort Sport 4 speed boxes, which have much better ratios than the 5 speed boxes.

The 4 speed is also a lot lighter... unless you shell out for a Quaife alloy casing and belhousing in which case it is only a bit lighter.
Also bear in mind that the 5 speed has an overdrive top.. wheras the 4 speed is a 1:1. You may end up wanting to change the diff ratio too... depending on how you use the car.#

Forgot to say... Caterham usually use the Ford T9 box, as used on some Sierras (XR4 etc)

Have fun
