Birkett Relay Race 28th October
Discussion
Yes I'll be in the Chim, we were hoping to have a team solely of TVR's but we've called in the services of a Westfield XI to make the numbers up after a few incidents at Oulton last time out in the Tuscan Challenge.
And no, not as a driver, although I was a goffer in 2004, but that was just turn up and do what I was told, as such I've no idea what we're doing.
Regards
Iain

How it works in a nut shell.
the 750 mc work out the estimated no of laps for each of your cars if they do an equal share of the track time.
in doing that calculation 1 team will end up with the highest number of expected laps. This is the scratch team. every other team will be calculated with a lower number of laps. the other teams wil be credited with their difference to the scratch team.
i.e if they have calculated that the scratch team should do 500 laps and that you should do 450 then you are credited with 50 laps so at the end of the race you should both have done a total of 500 laps. Thats how the handicaping works.
They will adjust your credits if you are substatially faster than your claimed lap times or your quickest cr does an unequal share of the track time. Also its important you stick to the spec you put on your form. one year a team put down they used list 1b tyres but ran slicks. they were disqualified....
Cars on track.
obviously as it a relay you are only allowed 1 car on the track at any one time. if you end up with 2 cars on track then your not credited any laps until one of them pits.
to do the hand over, the incomming car comes into the pits, as it passes your garage the next car forms up behind it, at the end of the pit lane the incomming car peels off in to the paddock and the other goes on to the track.
If a car stops on the circuit, its up to you to send out another car, but the other one must either drive straight into the pts when it gets going or is recovered, to avoid having 2 cars circulating.
You used to have to swap transponders on the cars, but i see they have asked for your cars transponder number so hopefully you dont ned to do that, as generally they only issued each team with 2 or 3, and if a car stopped on the circuit you had to go and get it.
tactics.
basically you want to maximise the time you've got a car on the track, and the ideal lap time is slightly ahead of what you've claimed, and to be consistant. time spent mesing about swapping cars or with cars stopped on the circuit costs heavily. every minute just about costs you a lap.
Traffic
there is a lot of very varied traffic, you'll be quicker than some and slower than some. you also need to be aware of the differenent cornering performance, for example some of the older heavier stuff, may be slow through the bends but they are still on the limit and will drift, get caught on the outside of something big and heavy drifting and you may well end up off the track. also some of the quicker stuff may try and dive up the inside as you turn in..
The general thing to remeber her is that its endurance racing not sprint racing, and i'd say if a move is less than 60% certain to leave it, this isnt the time for a 50/50 attempt. you can loose a few seconds a lap while you wait for a safe pass but minutes or more if you go off..
Above all enjoy it, its a great event and a bit of fun at the end of the day
Cheers
Graham
p.s. what do I know last time i did it the car did a lap and a half before the engine went bang on the start finish straight !!!!!

Oi! They are original Bathtubs I'll have you know
Thanks Chassis 33 Seems I'm 9C then. I was way off.
Those garages are going to be noisy then with all those V8's then, Ear plugs are for wusses.
I'm going up on the friday to sort the cars out and also scrutinerr them on Fri night as it saves time on Sat morning when it all starts to get a bit hetic!

Thats a good point if you can get their friday and get the car scruited ( you can do it before you sign on) it saves loads of time in the morning.
Also be careful in qualifying, each member of your team needs to do 3 laps, and just get a handle on things and dont worry about qualifying times, just get round and put the car away, you'll get plenty of track time later in the day....
