You might want to try looking in the various MTB Specific forums like www.whatmtb.com www.bikemagic.com etc, as the "Whats the best for £x" gets asked loads on those forums, and there's plenty of good options out there.

A few years ago i wanted a XC bike just to start getting back into the sport. Went to local Halords and got a ex display bike for half price due to a small scratch under the bottom bracket. Go me a £ 600 bike for £300. My advise would be to look for last years models that the dealers trying to get shut of to make way for new stuff.
