How to keep cool
Discussion
How do I keep the car cool and what should I look out for?
When my Chimaera gets up to temperature the fans come on and all in the world is good. They then go off and the car warms up a bit more. The fans come on (both of them) for about 1 minute and go off again. The car warms even more until I short out the switch to keep the fans on all the time since I am now at 110!!

True.
Not had mine for a while but think I remember it running a bit hot. A by-pass switch and changing the otter are things I hope to get done soon.

I've probably been lucky, but all mine have behaved perfectly, even in Roma, Mallorca, Monaco etc. etc.
desperately looking for summat wood to grab

A properly set up & maintained car should behave. Strikes me your otter switch may be suspect.
Mine blew a fuse on one of the fan circuits last year in Spain... in 42oC and didn't go above 95..
Something is amiss - check your otter, the radiator and your coolant...

I have had more otters than a water park and MI5 are coming along to sort out the hijack!
Fit the Mod-Wise two speed fan kit with the two thermostatic controllers that you can adjust to cut in the half and full speed fans at the temperature you want.
If you call David Beer on 01793 770730 he will give you genuine advice on what you need.
David is a good bloke, his prices are excellent value and this kit is something you should look at. By the way the two temperature probes effectively replace the otter switch in signalling the fans to turn on although the otter switch does remain conected and in place.
David will give you the technical details.

If the guage is saying 110... there is something seriously wrong with the car. At those sort of temps, it is easy to warp heads or do other damage. So don't ignore it. It could be an incorrect temp guage but they are usually reasonably accurate and I would not dismiss such a reading as "they all do that". They don't. If that temp reading is right then there is a problem that needs solving.
Could be low coolant levels, air locks, blocked rad, water leaks, broken fans, bad fan connections, blown head gasket etc.

I am sure that the mod-wise kits, water wetter etc do help keep the temp down a little, but the bottom line is that if your system is working properly then you shouldn't really need any of these for a chimaera (although I have heard that the post 1998 facelift models with the twin fans are a little better).
I would get the problem looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. Find the symptom and fix it rather than fitting things to mask the problem. Could be something very simple like a air blockage or a dodgy otter switch.
One thing that I would stay clear of is heat wrapping the exhaust, as previously mentioned that will just move the heat some place else that may cause other issues.
Good luck.
