I have had the joy of noticing said van just after the first fixed camera heading into town on the A3, just where you think 'I'll nail it again before the next camera'. Luckily it's a Merc Sprinter so not too difficult to miss.

Was the van marked up with camera partnership? Or was it just blank etc?

This wouldn't be in the same area as the fatal accident would it?

If so then they might actually be responding to a safety issue.

Wonders will never cease.

Yes, just where the A309 feeds in.

If it had camera partership then its a speed one. Just unusual to have a sprinter van they are normaly smaller. Thought it may hav been an ANPR.

That van has been there quite a bit recently .... parked up under the bridge just before the on slip from the Hinchley Wood by-pass. It is right on the edge of Surrey's ground as it goes into the Met area. As for being visible - it is on a right hand bend - my wife didn't see it a couple of months back biglaugh and got a £60 fine and 3 points for not being observant enough rolleyes

I saw a couple of Surrey Vans yesterday and whilst they may be in full regalia they are not that easy to spot. As you approach them you see the back which has hi-vis day-glo stripes, but so do many roadwork vehicles. The giveaway is the smallish camera sign, but its not that noticeable.

What I did notice was that they were both within a couple of hundred metres of a fixed camera site. Surely that alone is proof that cameras do not work? If they worked they wouldn't ned the support of the mobile camera!

This section of the A3 has been subject to much attention recently. I travel it daily, and despite the many, many fixed cameras it seems that more attention is needed. Both sides of the road, so take it slow through here.

And no, miles from the fatal the other day. That occured in a section of road where bad accidents are unfortunately common. Very poor road design there.

The A3 between New Malden and Guildford has had quite a high number of fatal collisions in the last 18 months ..... the bit between New Malden and Esher has been particularly bad. Not down to speed to my knowledge but it certainly doesn't help if you are carrying too much when you muck it up ! The poor record of the road is one reason why the speed limit was reduced on the narrower section from 70 to 50 a few years back - and it did significantly reduce the number of serious collisions; presumably giving people a bit more time to think .....

I am not a lover of excessive numbers of speed cameras but can't argue too much with them at least where there has been genuine problems on a road ....

FWIW the Surrey camera van - when under the brige prior to Hook - is not 'miles' from the fatal the day before yesterday .... the camera van is about 1/2 mile 'ish prior to Hook underpass, the fatal was as I understand it the other side of the underpass as you go north.

Remarkably close to an incident which I referred you to a few months back, John, in that case.

I have often noted that the first fixed camera is curiously non-reflective yellow - you konw the one next to all the tyre skid marks in the road.

Yes, very close and not the only incident like yours .... I witnessed something similar a while back off duty and tried to get the bloke prosecuted for it! My job being so efficient forgot to send him an NIP after I did the report so he got away with that one furious

I had also noticed the camera as you come into the 50 limit has shall we say somewhat 'flat' paint on it. I can't believe Surrey SCP aren't making enough from it to afford a coat of paint to brighten it up According to my local paper that camera clogged the local court system it was catching so many people ....

I could only initially assume that it was a nod in the direction of TSR18 since it's not within 50m of a streetlight, and so wouldn't need internal lighting or be retroreflective were it a traffic sign.

But then I thought probably it was just to make it less obvious so it catches a few more folks.

Tuesday and I've used up my whole week's ration of cynicism already...
