Discussion
ihave a 97 4.0 chimera that refuses to start, five weeks ago i stopped and started all daygaraged it, the following day she would not start, the rac also failed to start it,so it went to supposedly tvr dealers newtown motors,i had it back after three weeks drove it all day, parked it up the following day the same problem.
newtown motors have had the car since, and they have now told me that there is nothing else that they can do,and can i tow the car out of there after paying the £400.00 bill(now thats what i call after sales service)can anybody help me.in anticipation ?

I'd suggest a good specialist such as Peninsula. You might find a second set of eyes will spot and fix the prob. Suggest you push the car into the street around the corner from the dealer, call the RAC 'cos you've broken down and have them deliver you to Peninsula or whoever ... but call them to warn them first!
Good luck. I bet it's something simply but obscure such as a distributor part coming loose or a blockage in the fuel line.

Try Roath Gargage in Cardiff, he has a very good knowledge of the rover V8, top bloke too. Quite a lot of TVR's are going to him. I also have experience of Newtown's service department, guess who I use?

I would speak to the factory and tell them your story BEFORE you part with any money to these crooks. The factory are in a much better position to apply pressure than you are, once they have the money you can forget it.
The bottom line is that if they are unable to get a car started then they do not know what they are doing. If it was an intermittent problem which is not there when they look for it that would be another story altogether.
Good luck,
Ivan

Maybe a fuel blockage, blocked fuel filter or something. Any idea whether fuel is reaching the cylinders? Is the fuel line presurised? Maybe it needs air bleeding out of it. Could be the ECU isn't opening the injector solinoids. Take the ECU out and check the contacts are clean (pins 11 and 13 i think). ECU bug**red maybe, could be that it's not triggering the solinoids?
Who knows!!
Who knows!!

Can you smell petrol from the exhaust? If so you are getting fuel (maybe not enough or too much).
Is the air filter blocked/dirty or air sensor in good condition?
Maybe a PHer near you might be able to help by a process of swapping parts and see if the fault moves to the other car ??

just came back from tvr newtown motors they tell me that distributor cap and rotor arm are fine, but the distibutor is giving out a weak spark but they have a strong soark on the coil, ive asked them to check the distributor but (wait for it) they cant because they cant start the car. by the way they have not even checked or cleaned the stepper motor, could you please post the tel no of this garage in roath,im just about to phone blackpool to see what they can come up with.by the way newtown motors have very kindly offered to push my car out onto the main road so that i can be picked up by the recovery service!!!! thanks everybody for all your advice, and i will keep you posted

Roath Garage - 029 2046 5374. Ask for Peter. He used to advertise in 'Sprint', not sure if he still does. When I had problems with Newtown's service dept I went to see Glyn the owner of the franchise (the chap with the bow tie, his office is off the showroom) and he did sort things out for me after my grieviances (of which he was unaware) had been pointed out to him.

Al, don't think there's really been any shaming on here - naming yes, but not shaming surely?
The guy is just telling it like it is. Point being that the car is STILL there, so he's obviously happy for it to be so.
Son't think he's knocked Newtown Motors THAT much - others have more than him I think.

Hi Mike, didn't think for one minute that Chris would do a thing like that,
But if Chris is anything like me, I was so eager to get involved, I think it took me a couple of weeks to get around to reading the rules.
So carry on Chris,
it's an interesting post, and I really hope that it all gets amicably sorted mate.
BTW Chris, Sorry to be so rude but I have not welcomed you to the "MAD HOUSE" and the Chim forum. I consider my self severely B*llocked.
Big Al.

may be irrelivent/too late now,but have you tried the ignition module.although not the same car,i had this problem on an opel manta many years ago and the principle is the same.the spark was there at the plugs, but weak and inconsistent with timing, turned out it was a faulty module.completely foxed me as i thought if you had a spark then module must be ok!
Thank you everbody for your help and advice ,i have been in touch with blackpool, and spoken to jason customer complaints, who has promised to speak to glyn davies (co owner)i feel about his attitude regarding the problem with my TVR and everything that i personally have made public on a website and the ongoing problem with my car,to which in my estimation has not been improved since the original problem occurred ,if any fellow TVR owners were with me this afternoon and could have seen my car and i quote when the service manager asked where my car was he was told that it was all wrapped under cover in the rear shed ,i asked to go and see my car and i was totally shocked to find it covered full of dust dirt and hand marks and totally uncovered ,i am sure your words would have been a lot stronger than mine should you have seen your vehicle left in this condition.
I do appreciate all suggestions and comments, naming and shaming ,but i feel that if a case is ever justified then this one is,and i personally until satisfacion or an amicable agreemment is met i will most certainly not give up this against what i consider is total negnligence with the garage involved.
As i have already mentioned i have involved TVR Blackpool so hears hoping for a way forward. Thank you all again for your advice ,i will keep you posted.
