Car and baby quandry
Discussion
My Capex Committee (aka my good lady wife) has approved a toy car. However as we have a 6m baby I am torn between a 968 Club Sport in immaculate condiditon with lots of paperwork, but no backs seats and a 996 3.4 Carrera 2 also in good nick but not quite as nice as it has brown leather interior (I ould always look for another example).
Although we have a sensible everyday car I would quite like to be able to go out in the toy with the family -which means 996, it seems lots of other people seem to have reached the same conclusion and how often do the back seats get used?
Any help from the PH crew greatly appreciated.
Thanks

unless you are a track day fanatic and wish to abuse the 968CS then IMHO the 996 C2 is the one for you.
My friend bought a Boxster a year ago thinking he had a useable family car as back up, and eventually got rid of the boxster as he got fed up going out at the weekend and not being able to take the family in his pork
I have two boys (lanky 9 and six year olds) who fit perfectly comfortably in the car. If we all go out my wife needs to drive
as my seat goes back too far for the non-amputee 6 year old to squeeze in.
If you have a C2 rather than a C4 then there will be plenty of boot space, and even room behind the rear seats on the parcel shelf to store a buggy (when babe is in one)
All in all, if you want to use the pork every day, regardless of whether the family is with you then go for the C2 over the 968.

If you go for the 996 I'd advise against a Convertible. I've just bought one and am thinking it was a bad call. The rear seats are very vertical in the Cabs (due to the roof mechanism taking up space) and my wee girl is very upright and thus not that comfortable in the back. The back seats in a coupe are slightly reclined in comparison, which I understand makes a fair bit of difference.
I have a 993 as a weekend toy (and a Passat estate as family luggabout - we have two boys both under 4 years old) the rear seats of the 993 (with child seats) get used a fair bit, as the four us us can go all fit in the 993. However, you will have more interior space in a 996.
I never found a rear facing child seat that would fit in the back of a 993, I don't know about a 996 but others here have found suitable seats. Once your little one gets to 9 months (or ideally 12) a front facing seat will be fine, we use the Porsche Prince seats.
So of those I think the 996 is the car for you.
Edited to correct daft typos.

Don't put babies in 911s until they've stopped throwing up at random intervals. Milk is bad news in cars and you'll never get rid of the smell.
That said, when I have a kid, the first car it ever sets foot inside will be a 911. Start it off on the right foot eh?

Hmm, you may find those are mutually exclusive aspirations - the first time my boys were in a car was on the way home from hospital at a few days old (at most).
With the eldest, I only owned an SL at the time, so had to hire a car to get them home ...

Sounds like I need to do some planning then! I simply have to make sure that the first car my kid(s) ride in is a proper petrolhead's car. I suppose I can discount ambulances etc. if there's any aggro. It's currently a choice between a 911 and a supercharged V8 MG - though I'd prefer the 911...
Perhaps I'm just being silly, but I'd have loved to have been driven in a 911 as my first ever car ride, so my kids will have that (if possible)...

I suggest you invest in a Lamborghini LM002 - I think that should resolve that quandary entirely satisfactorily ...

did you try removeing the seat back?

I tried this yesterday jonny996 and it definitely helps.
Thanks.
The most practical choice is the 996 coupe. I have done thousand of miles around Europe with other half, and daughter (starting at 18months, now 3 +). Most of the miles I have done have been with my daughter in the back, and often packed for 2 weeks away.
The 996 (and I assume 997) have that little extra room that really helps. The rear shelf can also come into play and provides a vast area (nothing heavy of course but perfect for bedding / sleeping bags etc.
The seat I use is a recaro start, forward facing only so really 9 months and up, which comes with a safety bolster for younger kids which can be dispensed with when they are older. I have never had to remove the rear seats. In built speakers in the headrests to plug in walkman / MP3 etc are also great. About £150 or so.

I'm not sure about a 911 until the baby is able to climb into their seat (18 months) and has stop puking. Cleaning it out of the back is a serious issue and stops all bonding with the baby :-) Also really small babies that cant hold their heads up just flop around and make you feel guilty....
Perhaps the message is get the 911, leave the kids?
