It's a horses ass, well that's how i see it anywaymad!I hate the panel air filter in my late griff,it's a real swine to get at when i want to clean or change it.Has anyone converted to the earlier cylindrical type?To my mind you should just be able to fit the earlier type in the end of the hose, but how does it rest in place,ie what is the cut-out shape in the earlier griffs? At present i have a rectangular hole, with two cross brace strips for support, would i just cable tie the cylindrical filter to these?
I mostly worried that i wont get the same airflow from this mod,so any help welcome.
Usually, any changes that TVR made, were for the better,so what's the disadvantage of the earlier type then?I just cant see itconfused

My 98 500 was coverted to a Chimaera (cylindrical) filter at the last service.
Theory was that it allows more air into the engine bay around the filter which may help with under bonnet temps. The opening in the shell is as you describe , two rectangular holes. There is a piece of mesh over the holes and the foam filter is held in place with cable ties to the mesh.

Seems to work ok although I don't have a figures to indicate any difference in engine performance.

I'm in the process of converting it back and I'll be using a K&N panel filter. As I've got the rad out at the moment it's a simple job and as I only do about 1,500 miles a year the filter won't be coming out very often.

I had a cylindrical filter fitted instead of the panel filter as Ian @ TorqueRVT said much easier to change and better. Think it just went into the hose and supported with tye wraps. The panel filter hole had some mesh put over it.

I got rid of panel filter as part of the ACT induction kit (smooth bore pipe and K&N filter)... pipe was a bit of a tight fit and not very flexible but once its in it aint going nowhere

scratchchin How difficult is it to replace the std (96 500) panel filter with a K&N one? Is there much to be gained by fitting the ACT kit ? Thanks.

I've got K&N on both pre cat and 500. The pre cat has a cylindrical filter but the hole is the same as on the 500 - just rests in place. Mike - you can have a look at the weekend.
I replaced the horrid sponge crap with the K&N on the 500 and it was still the same shape and fitted in the original rectangle hole, eventually. Ran much better than before - maybe the filter or maybe in combination with the smooth bore pipe - anyway an easy and affordable mod with good results.

My 96 has the cylindrical one On mine (and it sounds like some dont have this as they are using cable ties) There is a metal cylinder that the Filter connects to one side and the Air intake the other. This Metal cylinder has a metal braket off it that is then bolted under the nose at the top to hold it in postion.
