Please help me out here chaps.

My 89 S2 has developed a very irritating surging motion when it is driven on
very light throttle, just off of idle. It is not dependant on speed or revs.
It is most apartent when in traffic. Fully closing the throttle stops it and
giving it a decent bit more also sorts it out. Niether really an option
around town in traffic. The problem only becomes aparent when the engine is warm.

I have change the DME and cleaned all the enging bay connections in the loom to
no avail. My feeling is throttle switch or airflow meter. Does any one have any
experience of something similar.

I am trying to justify keeping the car to myself and beloved as we have a
child on the way and these things don't help!

Stu,

No personal experience of the problem you speak of, but other people on other forums have described the contacts in the AFM getting 'worn out'. Apparently you can take the cover off it, and move the swinging contact to a different part of the track, which will overcome this problem.

I can't vouch for this - never done it, never even taken the lid off the AFM, but it may solve your problem.

All the best with the S2. I can understand why you want to keep it ...

Yup either TPS or Throttle Position Switch or AFM. The 8V one from
my local specialist was a nadge under £200 +VAT. I managed to get a second
hand one from someone on Porschenet! Fixed surging issue & brought the emissions
down to MOTable levels.

Could also be a clutch/drivetrain issue. Before I had a new clutch on the 924S, it was doing a kangoroo-type learner driver hop every so often. With new clutch, that seems gone (crosses fingers and looks pointedly at AFM)

Looks like I am dismantling things this weekend then!

Feels like throttle switch to me as it is not rev dependant
but we shall see.

Cheers
