Hello,

I have always dreamed of owning an Alfa, since the 80's my dream car was the GTV (GTV6 back then) and now i finally have the chance of owning one and thinking of buying a GTV 3.0 Lusso (2001) with 53k on the clock.

Not ever having owned an Alfa before, could someone please let me know what I should be looking out for and is the bad rep for the mechanics and electrics warranted on this type of car. I believe the car has been well looked after and a full service history, unfortunately there are no documents or invoices detailing mechanical works, such as cam replacement, suspension etc.

Thank you and kind regards.

Check for squeaks in the rear suspension, they eat bushes and when the bushes go they can damage the aluminium sub frame which costs ££££s. Mine has this problem and I am about to get it powerflexed which seems to be the best long term fix. Also check all the electrics. Great car though, I love it.

The V6's dont suffer with the bush problems (its on the TS models).

My V6 (98 - early Phase II) did, but a set of powerflex bushes sorted it out a treat for not too much money.

Agree with all your other comments, though. thumbup

If you have no evidence of a recent cambelt change, get it done asap. Regardless of milage, 5 years is the max recommended lifespan of the belt.

Find a good specialist and it'll take the sting out of the bill.

I've had my '01 3.0V6 from new and my profile lists everything that's happened to it over that time.

They do, but not quite as badly as the TS models, my 2001 V6 is booked in to be powerflexed( at the rear) on Monday.

Thank you all for the comments and tips, it is greatly appreciated. I am just over the moon that no one posted horror stories. I'm collecting the car this weekend and will have it in the garage for a once over and cam replacement early next week.
