A recent computer problem caused some damage to my hard drive, and while a utilities programme seems to have rescued most of the info OK I can no longer run one application properly because it can't access a Windows common file it needs.

So does anybody have an old Windows 98 CD ROM I could borrow to try and reload it? And please don't suggest updating to a new version. I like using Windows versions 4-5 years past their introduction date as I figure that way Microsoft might just about have got all the bugs out of it...

You can contact me via e-mail address in my profile.

Graham, there is one flaw in your thinking. I do not believe MS do any bug-fixing in their software once the next version has been released to the public. Therefore to get the 'most fixed' version you should go for Millenium. Mind you the newer versions introduce new bugs as well as fix older ones

Whoops! It's listed in my 'private' member's profile but not on the public one. I'll check which Windows version I've got and be in touch.

Thanks.

I'm sure you're not suggesting I would make illegal pirate copies of m/soft's wonderful products ?

Nope. Couldn't find anything that said which version of Windows 98 it is - but then again I don't know where to look!

By the way mrsd, you have e-mail. Assuming it got sent that is. Been having some fun with my firewall blocking things, though think I've got that sorted out now. Computers - great when they're working properly...

Have a look in your registry.

Start>Run regedit

Then, in the registry, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent Version

There should be a key in there that says either 98 or 98 Second Edition.

Matt.

Or alternatively just rightclick on "my computer" on the desktop, and go to the "properties"

If your need either 98 or 98 second addition. I have both on original discs.

Your welcome to borrow both, purely for demonstration purposes of course.

Thanks for that all. Did try right clicking on windows and then properties but didn't work, though going the start>run route eventually showed just windows 98 with no mention of second edition, so assume that's what it is.

I hope you've got my email. Entirely legal copy of Windows '98 on its way to you now. Good luck getting it sorted. It's well worth getting the service pack from m'soft btw.
