Hi all,
I got my 500 at the weekend, but I felt the the PAS isn't offering much assistance and the system sounds loaded. Ie, you can hear the hiss of the pressure relief valve when it isn't on full lock. I didn't notice this on the other ones I looked at. The steering definately feels heavier. When it's been parked a small amount of fluid can be found under the rack (may just be a split gaiter - no chance to look yet. Any thoughts? Perhaps I have a stiif (ooh er) wishbone ball joint?

As always, any help much appreciated.

My PAS sounds identical to that, except for the leak. I compared it to one other car and that was the same, so it probably isn't faulty. Except for the leak.

there is a pressure relief valve, if its faulty allowing excess fluid pass then the pump will sound noisy as the fluid bleeds past the valve and the assistance will be less,it wont be able to maintain enough pressure to allow correct operation/assistance,but in saying this if thers an internal leakage inside the rack this will also make the pump noisy, but that noise wont be present till you turn the steering wheel.get a second opinion anyway, unless someone put oil in the gaiters there should not be oil in the bellows, this will indicate the end seal as failed and the unit needs resealing/attention,this does not apply to manual racks.as a guide mine makes no noise, apart from flushing when i purchased the car and new fluid,as i said just get it checked.

That sounds like the symptoms on my rack. It only makes the noise when the weel is turned. So, I suppose I need to consider a duff seal inside the rack. I hope this doesn't mean a full recon job. Is it DIYable to you think. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but forewarned is forearmed as they say!

if your handy with the spanners then yes,but as a quick novice DIY no,generally if you have an internal leak the whole thing as to come apart,at least to be re/sealed and inspected,no room for mistakes im afraid.possibly easier to get your one rebuilt by a PAS company.
