Popular for nearly 20 years

I had my first Thomas books over 30 years ago

And I'm sure the lentil munchers would say that I haven't grown up normal and TTTE was influential in me becoming the social deviant I am (sports car, sports bike, own house, work ethic etc)

makes my fg blood boil

'Brian Nobhead, a psychology lecturer' - says it all. Those who can, do...those who can't, teach...those who can't teach, lecture at university. Another example of a so-called intellectual who can't cut it in the real world so he hides away in academia and pretends he's important. My 2 year old loves TTTE and bawls every time I tell her I'm off to Liverpool or Manchester on the train and she can't come with me, bless her cottons...he sounds like a second-rate, fourth division, lentil-eating, slipper wearing, pipe smoking, patches-on-the-elbows-of-his-jumper dipshite.

There, I feel better now...

I notice the tw@t doesn't seem to have done any research or present results of any testing or experimenting. It seems to me that it's just something he thought up over a cup of tea !

As this appears to be how all legislation is brought about in this country nowdays we can expect Thomas to be banned within the week.

Now is the time to use all those mass mailer software systems mentioned last week

He probably reads the Guardian, wears socks & sandals and drives a Morris Minor Traveller wearing string back gloves.

no wait.. there might be somehting in it...

"Thomas the Tank Engine is aimed at a pre-school audience who tend to be more likely to see the programme as a reality," he told the Times newspaper.
well then, boys and girls.. the answer is that the only reason any kid is going to associate TTTE with reality is if they've never been on a train.

So there's the answers.. get your kids on the train and leave the roads free for those of us who don't have the responsibility of shaping the reality of a young impressionable mind

oh.. and..

Pisses me off though that the BBC make a story out of it?? Another feather in the cap of those "TV is bad for our children campaigners"... TTTE is a classic - my godsons love it and frankly so do I - so there!!!

I commute daily, so Paddington, Hatfield , a reasonable chance of terrorist attack, sharing a carriage with people incapable of using soap or a handkerchief, and friendly aggressive beggars have not made me worried about trains. But now I know of the traumatic images on TTTE I have severe anxiety for future journeys.

My little boy loves TTTE to the point that he wont be parted with James the little red engine. He loves it, everything to do with it and in fact quite likes the crashes - wouldnt quite make the same interest if you have "and the train left on time to arrive at the next station on time". Doesnt make it very interesting for kids really does it?

Morons the lot of them.... what possess such jumped up self-publicist people like this to spout such garbage. As has already been pointed out, surely the fact that we have had some serious accidents on our rail network is enough to genuinely put people off the trains - I mean, where do I start? Southall, Hatfield, Paddington etc etc etc.... they were fatal accidents which left hundreds traumatised..... which was extensively shown on BBC TV under the guise of 'news'... which is worse? A bunch of model trains with faces (who dont actually get hurt) or the real thing where people BURN TO DEATH????

I rest my case m'lud.

Cheers,

Paul

P.S. I loved TTTE as a kid and it never did me any harm....?!?!?

P.P.S. Isnt TTTE on the other channel than BBC? Could that be the cynical reason why they have targetted them? I always remember it being on ITV, am I wrong?

Interesting..

First of all, the press release doesn't mention any research, but merely quotes him saying things like 'possibility that the sheer amount of crashes they see on Thomas could frighten them'.

Sticking my head above the parapet as a Psychologist in the real world rather than academia, its not my field, but I agree with him, it is possible that sort of thing will frighten some kids.

However, IMHO, without any research to hand I would say this is very unlikely. The other thing missing is that IIRC there is usually a happy ending with happy smiling trains, coaches and people.. So, whilst kids might momentarily be concerned, they will be used to the pattern of everything being ok in the end. Its not Under Seige 2 FFS..

The chances of any long term phobia are about the same IMHO as my winning the lottery this week. Ok, slightly more as I've no intention of buying a ticket.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy was misquoted, or at least parts of what he said not quoted, (along the lines of 'yes, its possible, but equally likely that Elvis and Jackie O are shacked up in a bedsit in Neasden').
