As of yet I dont use filters, but I am looking to try some, mainly polarisers and gradual grey stuff.

Due to the varying sizes of my filters it would get a bit expensive to buy a filter of each kind for each lens, so I have 2 options, buy one of each filter in the largest filter thread siz with a step down so that it will fit all the lenses, OR do i buy myself a Cokin filter mount set thing, and then use that with the relevant lens attachements.

Any advice will be greatly recieved.

Re grad:

You'll generally use grad filters on wider lenses. I've always had them for my preferred landscape lens - so a cokin system with your wide / zoom lens will be the way to start (IMHO). Not that expensive either.

If you end up spending shed loads on lenses, you'll want to upgrade the filters to Lee (for example) which bend the light a lot less.

...but they cost a blimmin fortune.

If going for Cokin I'd spend the few quid extra on the larger P series filters, you'll be much less likely to suffer from vignetting problems at the wide end of your zoom - expecially if you have a protective filter on the end of the lens already. I started out with the Cokin A series and kept them in one of the Cokin boxes of 10, well I did until the top came undone while I was on the road, all the filters came out and rubbed together during the journey. Turned out to be a good time to upgrade. I bought the velvety Lee filter pouch to keep my new Cokin P filters in, that was definitely worth the money to protect them from dust and scratches !
