Hi Guys

I am new to piston heads, just thought I would say hi.

I am serously considering buying a Chimara, and am looking for advice on buying one. Just wondered if there are posts I can look at where this subject has been covered before? This will save you guys writing things again.

I look forward to showing pictures of my new purchase shortly.

Cheers JJ

Hi James!thumbup

I purchased my first chim 4 months ago it’s a dream car for me and luckily my chariot as I like to call her has lived up to all my hopes and dreamsdriving .
If I was you I would buy the Steve Heath tvr second edition from the TVRCC or on e-bay, it will cover nearly all the questions you will want to know about the car itself . Then just keep looking in the classifieds until one jumps out at youbounce.
Pistonheads has been a god send to me , so look every daytype for more info, you can never have enough info!
. TVR’s are a sound car if looked after so history is very important, the little problems you get with them are usually easy to fix, do-it-yourself or by a good garage who knows the cars well, parts seem very reasonable too.

Good luck with your search and buy the best condition one you can find.
It’s a buyers market.
You won’t regret it!

Cheers for the reply.

I have been looking around it appears a mine field what with rusty chasis etc. It doesn't even look as if you can trust a tvr dealer. Have seen one on ebay for about 9k going to see it at the weekend. I can't afford to get one which will burn a hole in my pocket though. My 900 carlsson is trying to do that already rolleyes

Are there any friendly chaps on pistonheads that come out to help look at candidates for a few beers or a breakfast?

If you are South East you could do a lot worse than pop over to Fernhursts. If they've got one you fancy, get 'em to pop it up on their ramp & show you the dirty side.

I've heard that Rob Ingleby will source you a good specimen, for a fee (£400 or £500 I think), which I've heard is worth it to avoid ending up with a lemon and all the associated costs. I'm sure someone on this forum will know how to contact him.

I hope to be in the market for a Chim early next year and may consider using Rob rather than trusting my own (limited) judgement.scratchchin

Yep own judgement in my case would probably rely on a bit of luck jester. Problem is knowing what is a bad one. Their expensive as it is without having to fix em straigt away.

Just do it, bought mine about 6 months ago and used it nearly every day - a few niggles but as any 98 car may get - look around the forums on here the advice is second to none and invaluable, certainly steered me the right way. I took Rob Ingleby to look at my fist potential purchase and he had found the one I finally bought for the previous owner only 12 months before. He gives a thorough check and knows what to look for (as I didnt) as hes seen a few - 07799142860 - to get in touch. Happy Hunting

Hi again

Is it possible for a chimaera to have the old chasis replaced with a new stainless steel one? If so how can you tell? and will this prevent the rust problems?

cheers

There are many posts on what to look for when purchasing a Chimaera.

If I may say, the most important one is Buy on Condition.

Hi Guy spent the weekend looking at various chimaras. They all have some elements which I don't like. I've found one I like R reg 58k from a tvr dealer it comes with a TVR Warranty. They are looking for just under £11k. Does this seem fair (i know it depends on the quality etc.) I just wondered what these should really be retailing at.

Good price from a dealer when you take into consideration warranty.
Private seller i would expect 9.5-10k

Cheers.

If I arranged an AA inspection would they know what they were looking for chasis wise?

If it's a TVR dealer i reckon you can be pretty safe but it's your choise at the end of the day.

Very true.

If its at a dealer get them to put the car on the ramp & show you underneath & around the car.

I doubt the AA will be any help at all, they dont usually know their way around TVR's very well.

Theres a few specialists in the area who might be able to help, but if you need to know more drop me a line through my profile & I'll try to point you in the right direction.
