Had one of these way back when I were a lad.....
Buy an overbored barrel & piston kit (think they go to 69cc), slightly bigger jets in the carb and a decent exhaust system. That gave me enough for 45-50 roughly (hit 63 once - downhill though...
) and in all honesty you won't get it much faster without nitrous - which you can buy for small cc bikes - my little sis has a nitrous kit on her Derbi 125 (faired plastic superbike lookalikey thing - can't remember exactly what it is) and that makes it go very well
.
If you want to go quick i'd sell the DT and buy an Aprilia RS50 (or similar) - they're much quicker. DT's more fun off road though
Cheers

Hi Phil, I used to have one of these too! about 17 years ago in fact!
Don't have any links or stuff but be careful with big bore kits etc, you will be breaking the law if you fit one and ride it at 16.
Not that I ever did that on mine, 70cc big bore kit, bigger carb, racing reeds, racing pipe, 60mph, oh no I would have never have done that would I?!
Great little bikes, I have so many memories of the capers myself and mates got up to on our peds!
Maybe ask on bcf, www.bikechatforums.com/ lots of younger riders on there, a few old farts too who will go no,no,no,no,no etc

Blimey... we've all had one..
My first (legal) transport was a brand new DT50mx
Ahh the memories... i could bore you silly on mine as i modified it to death.
If you want the full tale, drop me a line..
Basically, what has already been said.
I wont start on the legal aspect.. thats already been covered..
Firstly, the DT50 is restricted in the front (expansion) exhaust pipe.
Ditch the standard exhaust and get (if they still make them) a Gianelli front pipe and DEP sport end can..
If i remember right, the front pipe attaches to the engine barrel by a screw on collar.. Its easy to strip the thread here so be careful.
If this is done correctly what you then notice is the bottom end of the power delivery feels a bit flat but all of a sudden the power-band kicks in and hey presto 45mph is easily obtained. Its quite fun if the engine is still in good condition.
After that i went for a 65cc big-bore kit. (actually it ended up being 70cc after numerous rebores and about 3 different big bore kits..)
If i remember right the Autisa big bore kit was the one to have.. good quality and all that. and that had a port job on it
then you need to rejet the carb (preferably a bigger one) and a set of Hi-tech racing reeds.. oh and a baby K n N air filter.
I upped the gearing on mine and after getting a drag from a caravan towing car (see caravans are good for some things
) i hit 75mph on the clock.. flippin scary with the drum brakes.. oh and a 3inch jack up kit on the suspension.. but probably the most fun i've ever had..
Remember if you start big-boreing you will need to add premix 2-stroke to your tank as the little auto-lube pump is set for the standard 50cc.. Dont do what i did to start with and add too much just to smoke the world and his dog out... (ahh to be 16 again
)
I found a little forum ditty for you which may help:

Sorry getting a bit carried away here.. but if you really did want to go totally over the top.. The old DT80 engine and box was the exact same dimension and you could then get a big-bore kit for that to 97cc. the reason why the 80kit wouldnt fit on the 50 (like the Kawasaki AR50 / 80 which everything was interchangeable) is cause the hole in the crank-case isnt big enough on the 50 for the 80 piston to fit..
Right nostalgia trip over.. hope that helps a bit.
cheers,
Nick

To be honest i'm not sure.. If the ports are the same size etc as the standard barrel then you will need a port job done.. You can get books on this kinda old-school tuning if you want to get handy yourself.. (a good way to learn is on a cheap simple 2-stroke bike)
However i would still go for something like the autisa kit..
My mate had one use to piss oil out of the exhaust all the time (not funny) visor caked in two stroke oil! I use to try to ride in front after that incident...
I started my road biking days on an AR50 in white with a micron full system which equated to naff all for the performance but was good for polishing up. Fond memories
