The children's hit television programme Thomas the Tank Engine may be making children frightened of going on trains because of the number of crashes in its stories, according to a British psychologist.

The animated series, based on children's books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, feature the adventures of a little steam engine who has been popular in Britain for almost 20 years.

But Brian Young, a psychology lecturer at Britain's Exeter University, says the large number of accidents in the programmes could have a negative influence on children.

"Thomas the Tank Engine is aimed at a pre-school audience who tend to be more likely to see the programme as a reality," he told the Times newspaper.

Mr Young, an expert on how children react to TV programmes, said there was evidence that children who watch programmes that consistently portray the same image tend to think there is more danger than normal.

"As a result there is a possibility that the sheer amount of crashes they see on Thomas could frighten them," he said.

"Seeing lots of crashes on TV means they could end up absolutely terrified of going on a train."

A spokesman for ITV, which broadcasts the show, told the Times it was confident the series was suitable for children.

Thomas is owned by British media company Hit Entertainment, along with Barney the Dinosaur, Bob the Builder and other animated characters.

Absolute fcuking bollocks.

What an earth is this world coming to?

I loved Thomas the Tank engine and his friends stories, and there is nothing wrong with me.

Hmm... on second thoughts...

But you get my point - Bollocks bollocks and bigger hairier bollocks. Sorry about the swearing but that has really raised my heckle, not a lot does but that...sheesh...

Edited to add: -

What about the dinosaurs, do the kids now grow up thinking that they are all cuddly, and Bob the fcuking Builder, I can imagine why kids now are like they are - the lazy jobsworth Bob never does any fecking work...

Kids need a good scaring every so often so as to ensure that they know what to do and NOT to do.

Just saw this on the TV. Apparently psychologists fear children may be traumatised by the number of accidents in the stories and may make them scared of getting on trains in later life... FFS !!!

My little boy (2 1/4) loves Thomas, his favourite is 'Diesel', especially where D pushes the trucks through the buffers. He also loves going on trains.

What a stupid waste of time and effort. simple solution, do a survey with properly constrructed questions....oh hang on.... I have never seen a survey with properly constructed questions

I hate travelling on trains 'cos I was in a real train crash.

On a similar thread, don't travel in a red & yellow car 'cos the police will stop you.

Now when it comes to to crossing the road, never do it with a rabbit cos that Bobby Brown Rabbit was a loon. Always cross with a squirrel and a badger in uniform.

I love it. What a great country.
Were going to war, but hey Thomas the Tank Engine needs the attention of the nation.

God knows what they will make of Captain Pugwash and Seamen Stains.

And Brian Young is now sitting back saying to himself "Great, now I've got myself a name and I can get my book published / appear on TV / make my fortune". This is just a milder form of media manipulation, just like Nu Labia gets up to (IMHO).

We've also had a chat about this thattaway --->

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=31831&f=23&h=0

Rather than quote what I put there, the gist is that I think he has been misquoted, or at least only partially quoted. There is a chance of kids being frightened, but IMHO as another Psychologist, (albeit in the real world not academia), the chances of their reaction being anything other than wide eyed bewilderment that kids get all the time are virtually nil.

Misquoting used to happen to me frequently. I'll give you an example, I say 'there is a small probability that x will happen but its unlikely because of y and z', they quote 'there is a probability that x will happen'..

I don't blame folks here for getting annoyed, this story is absolutely ridiculous IMHO..

Kids are far more likely to be traumatised by watching real life, hell I need a drink after watching the news sometimes.. (I'm not going into the can they tell the difference debate - probably they are not as stupid as we think).

My 22 month old son, loves the crashes, his favourite is Gordon takes a tumble, all over the house you can hear oh no, oh no, oh no, crash, and his favourite two words seem to be Gordon and Crash.

I think this is namby PC going too far (again)

Anyway why not ban Holby City because thats a far more dangerous place (if not the most dangerous place in the universe) and they make two programmes a week about different hospitals (Casaulty and Holby City). If any kids saw these (over their parents shoulders) not only would they be scared of going out of the house but of staying in as well.
