And I just know the new assembly workshop will land in Poland. "Italy" is the interim press release.

I have to say, moving it to Italy to save a few quid does sound very odd. Poland? Cheap labour etc, yes, but Italy? Surely the Eyetyes, I mean our Italian bretheren, pay their workers something aligned to what they get over here? So where's the cost saving in that?

Taxation is as much an issue as cost savings on Employees salaries - Corporation Tax, Employers NI etc not to mention the cost of materials, services (heat, light, electric, gas etc), council tax, blah blah.

They do the math and hey presto - "we're outta here"!

Throw European Health and Safety legislation and its cost implications into the mix as well.
UK company approach is that current legislation is a minimum standard to acheive as enforced under statute but in Europe the approach seems to be that the statute is something to aim for. To my knowledge, the HSE do not accept an aspirational approach as a defence for non compliance so if such costs can be avoided or say minimised, to be generous, in Europe, then economics would suggest a relocation is the answer.

I have a horrible feeling this may just be an example of re arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic though.

Shame however its looked at really.

I have a vague memory that Trevor Wilkinson formed a company Trevini plastics after he parted company with TVR. I think it made things like car park kiosks, Ice cream tricycle hampers etc.

So you are not far off with the name there!

Trevor lives in Spain now.

I heard the drivetrain is still being made in the UK as the Italians haven't quite got used to the concept of 5 forward gears and one reverse.

Does anyone think that having the cars assembled in Italy will actually improve any of the perceived TVR build quality issues?..... laugh

I note the marathon thread on TVR's departure from our shores is entitled: TVR moves to Europe. Where the hell is the UK if not in Europe?

It's actually a quite acceptable contraction in a heading, although if they were still teaching geography is schools, it would be best if they avoided using it. What it really means is that TVR moves to the European mainland, too long for a thread. If it was going to Ireland then the heading would, of course, be misleading. (And please, don't read anything into that.)

Maybe it is this mindset that caused the downfall of TVR (and many other (car) brands for that matter) in the first place. PW certainly did not have a focus on mainland Europe and left a possibly interesting market waiting for LHD versions too long or in vain.
The dealers and customers (I am one of them) on the continental part of Europe certainly feel like TVR is not just on the other side of the channel, but like we are separated by an ocean.
No idea what is going to happen in the near future, but my hope at least is that the customer base can be expanded far beyond the British part of Europe with positive effects for all of us; even outside of Europe. It is up to NS now to take appropriate action.

Kind regards from the other side of the channel.

p.s. Please bear in mind that from a Dutch perspective Italy is further away than Blackpool.

Actually i dont have a problem with Europe, I just dont consider myself to be part of it, and certainly dont apreciate a septic telling me Im european, when most dont have a clue where it is on a map. As for my anscestory its largly scottish rather than norman hehe

As for Where TVR's are made, yes Id prefer it if they were 100% uk designd and built, but if its the difference of them not being produced and being produced I really dont mind where they stick them together....

Where is 'here'?.....I thought you were in Holland.

Largely, I agree with what Graham says...we may be part of the EEC but we are not part of Continental Europe. TVR being built abroad will knock some of the shine off it for me (and some others I'm sure).

I think - Peter Wheeler in the Video the TVR Story said it would have been much better if the man would started TVR had been called
something like "Ferrari" rather than TreVoR...

Perhaps the owner really wanted to rebrant TVR as 'Benelli' .. as he was trying to buy that recently.

There is no other country that is as politically correct as Britain. It is our disease. It's almost a fever and probably fatal.

After all, not all that many Italians, Swiss, French, Spanish, Germans, Austrians, or Luxemburgians bought them when built in Blighty ... did they?

Did TVR push the continental market? From what I can gather, they would build a non-USA left hooker but only with the greatest reluctance and you had to ask nicely.

Surely spreading the market base is sensible and it is much easier marketing in the EEC than the USA. The sudden and unheralded number of continental dealers tends to indicate where NS' abitions lie. I'm no expert but aren't there distinct advantages to building in the Euro-zone if you want to sell there?

This talk of nationality is a bit of wishful thinking. I have an American friend who proudly told us that chop suey was an American dish. This despite the fact it was invented by Chinese labourers and only eaten by them initially whilst they were in America and working on a railway line. When they finished they were returned to China. Can't get more American than that. Mick Flately correographs an American tap routine, sticks the women in short skirts and calls it Irish. I seem to remember the Benneton F1 team becoming Italian overnight when the only thing that changed was the record they played when they won. TVR has a Russian owner, it's underpinned by foreign money, some want to buy-in an American/German V8, yet want it to remain English.

If TVR goes abroad, they will be marketed as English, if NS has any sense, and who is to say it is not. If it is a good product and aimed properly, it will sell. Wherever it is from. If it does go abroad, it will be a dreadful shame that it is not built in Britain, England, Blackpool. There're 260 people in Blackpool who won't buy one, and who can blame them, but, if the cars are really good, would you join them?

you should know, living in the US, that geography is not a strong point is the US schools system - most of them think Japan is in Europe...
