Still, there must surely be compensating elements...is Petrol taxed as much as in the UK? Or perhaps the roads are maintained to a higher standard, how much is an MOT (...and I'm assuming such a thing exists)?

I'm not sure... but one compensation is that in much of Italy there doesn't seem much requirement to follow the rules of the road. Or, to put it another way, the only rules are (a) observe what's going on in front of you and take avoiding action as necessary and (b) otherwise do what appears to be the right thing to do at the time. And (c), in big cities, beep the horn every thirty seconds. On the down side, almost every car seems to have a big dent in it somewhere.

[There ought to be a smiley for blatant national stereotyping, but I can't think of one]

You might feel better to learn that road tax for a Chimaera here in Ireland is............€1343 - approx £885 sterling per year. Petrol @ €1 per litre - approx 66p helps to make up for it a little.

In Italy we do not have a "road tax" but an "ownership tax" (you pay even if you do not use the car... up to 30 year old). It depends by the power, a 250 bhp car is around 350GBP.
Then we pay for driving in highway (4 penny/km +/-).
Petrol is 0,81 GBP/litre.
Insurance depends by the accident history of the vehicle/driver. The thir party is between 400 GBP (if you do not have accidents in the last 10 years...) and 2000 GBP (if you have to cover a vehicle without an old insurance, eg. if you buy a second car...).
MoT, we have a similar test performed after 4 years (new car) and then after every 2 years.
Here it is very difficult to register car without EC homologations (as TVR).
