Tyre question (again)
Discussion
I'm sure that this topic has been done before but I'm coming up for new tyres (993 C2 Coupe 18" wheels, 225/40/18 Front 265/35/18 Rear) and don't want to buy the wrong ones. Currently have Avons but have never been that impressed with grip levels, particularly at the front. What is the general view on best choice? Does it really matter if you buy 'N' rated or not? Are there different 'N' ratings?
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
Martin.

Hi Martin,
Still no joy finding a buyer then, I assume?
From all the reading I've done on here, the N rating simply means that they are Porsche-approved for the car. Non N-rated tyres may well perform just as well in practice - but there's no guarantee of that and so it's probably a bit of a lottery in whether a given tyre will prove to be up to the job.
However, as you're trying to sell it, I think buyers who are clued-up about the subject will be more inclined to assume that if you've skimped on non N-rated tyres, what else has not been maintained to Porsche standards? Whether that assumption is justified or not, it's something you need to consider.
(I only became aware of the N rating issue after seeing it, I should add)
I don't know how much more N-rated tyres like Pirelli P Zero Rossos or Contisports are than something like the ZZ3s that are currentl fitted, but it's money well-spent to give yourself - and in particular prospective buyers - the peace of mind that they are the "right" ones for the car.

I'm having some second thoughts about selling now Mark. After driving the Clio V6 around for a few weeks I'm not so impressed as I thought I would be. I have also had some cracking drives in the Porsche recently. I think I've got around paying for the french house now so should be able to keep it (don't think the wife is going to let me keep them both though!).
Anyway, if anyone can give tyre makes and recommendations that would be great.
Cheers,
Martin.

Glad you've been able to juggle the pennies to make that possible
I'm not in the best position to offer considered advice (having only been an owner for a couple of weeks!) but the P Zero Rossos on the 993 I ended up buying have seemed pretty sure-footed to date. The pre-purchase research I did on tyres turned up that Continental Sportcontact N2s seem to be well-thought of on here.

A lot of the N rated tyres are totally different compond and even width compared to the standard variants. iirc Conti Sports are 220 tread wear for non N, and 160 for N. There are also those on Rennlist who replaced 205 section N tyres with 225 non N rated, they were actually slightly narrower.
Search on Rennlist for more info.
Had a quick look on mytyres.co.uk and there seem to be loads of different 'N' ratings i.e. N1 through N4. There are even some tyres offered with different N ratings! (Bridgestone Potenza N2 & N3). Any idea what the difference is ?
Sorry to appear a muppet but what is 'rennlist' ?

The difference between N0, N1, N2, N3 is the amount of times they have been tested by Porsche from what I understand, they start at N0 and work up, probably retested due to slight change in design / compound?? But I'm not 100% sure!
I have Avon ZZ1's on my 968 and they are Rubbish (espeacially in the wet!), I'll probably go for some N rated ones in the new year!
I think the phrase 'rubbish' sums up my Avon ZZ3's quite nicely. I've had some experience of other brands on sports cars as follows -
Bridgestone SO-2 on Subaru Impreza WRX - very good
Dunlop SP 9000 on BMW M Coupe - very good
Michelin Pilot Sport on M Coupe - Pants !!!
Goodyear Eagle F1 on M Coupe - good
I have never used Continental tyres so have no experience. LL comments on the 'Sport Contacts'. Has anyone else got a recommendation for these (or others)?
Cheers,
Martin.
