I'm getting a somewhat blackish smoke coming out of the exhaust, especially after starting the car on weekends after sitting idle during the week. I initially put it down to condensation, however the smoke was not white and was smelly; felt like driving a diesel... Now, was out for a drive over the weekend with a friend who was driving behind in his boxter (as you would expect ). He told me later that I had smelly smoke coming out of the exhaust pretty much at all times during our drive, especially when flooring it.

Any suggestions what might cause this?

Black smoke sounds like mixture or ignition. How does the engine perform? Has fuel consumption increased?

if its smelly you may find its over fueling, your giving the catalyst more work hence the smell best described as eggy/stinkbomb smell,if so that could be faulty oxygen sensors,ECU temperature transmitter etc,not necceserally in that order.get a 4 gas emission test done, that will confirm lots.

Drain out smelly diesel and re-fill with Optimax.
