Anyone read in todays Times , Douglas Alexanders proposals for pilot schemes in relation to road charging ?
The suggestion is parts of the M25 are soon to be inflicted with charges of up to £1-34 per mile at peak times.
The Tories are saying that if elected at the next election, they will introduce similar charges on ALL roads, together with massive increases in vehicles excise duty, and large increases in fuel duty to "combat global warming ".
Does this, coupled with the idea of all drivers having "a little black box " in their vehicles ( I will NEVER submit to this )to momitor where/when we drive effectively mean that driving for pleasure will soon be a thing of the past and that sites such as this will fold.
Any comments ?

I haven't seen the article, but I assume that it's got to be some way off - the costs of installing black boxes in all vehicles and the infrastructure involved in monitoring it all will have to fight for budgetary space along with countless other demands on the public purse.
Assuming that such a system becomes law, however, you don't have much choice in whether or not you adopt it unless you are prepared either to stop driving or risk imprisonment. Faced with that sort of choice, I suspect most of us will simply acquire the necessary black box?

What I find disturbing is the fact that "the authorities" will know what time you start your journey, where you go , how you got there , your speed, how long you stayed, what time you began your journey back if applicable etc.etc.
Do people REALLY want that ?

There will be quite a few stories about this and best intentions from politicians....but will it ever actually happen??

Remember the millenium bug? Did any planes fall out the sky? Did microwave ovens stop working? My 1993 Viglen laptop was still working fine with no mods up until i replaced it in 2005!

Maybe for certain sections of road, but nationally its just not gonna happen.

Can you imagine the road rage this would generate? Driving can be stressful enough without a rolling cost of your journey so far being displayed on your dashboard, or, even worse, the worry of that monthly bill dropping through your door. Let's just hope that the current NHS computing debacle will stifle any desire to go down this route.

Dream on...

the Y2K bug is irrelevant to the point about our political masters attempts to monitor its citizens movements. Your comparative example of a technical deficiency was due to the short-sightedness of a small group of individuals in a room somewhere back in the 70's playing with just two bits of a byte. This current group of technologies is altogether very, very different and will happen. without a shadow of doubt; assuming the population take the arch view that if they wish the bad fairy away enough times before bedtime, it will never materialise.

this is just the start...

and the coffers will be bottomless.

The comparison I was making is the scare-mongering that is going on just like what happened in the run up to 2000.

It proved to be a non-starter, as i think this will be on a national scale.
