I've just bought this car

and naturally the salesman offered me some sort of paint protection. I declined, but are they really any different from each other? I've had a look on the old bay of e and there's plenty of Autoglym kits for not much money, but are others better?

Do I need to polish it first? Its a Feb 06 build but stood about til now.

It's clear-over-base.

The paint pigments are protected from the environment and UV by a lacquer coat. It's not like old top-coat solid paints, where, as lots of older cars attest, reds suffered.

Look after the clearcoat, and the red will be fine. There'll be loads of opinions on what cleaning and protection products routine are the best within your budget and available time, and I'll not stick my £.02 into that debate, but don't be concerned that because it's red you need spend more, or take any more care than with any other clear-over-base finish.

As stated red with clearcoat finish is no longer a problem colour, so don't worry about it turning pink before your eyes.

If you do choose to apply lifeshine or any other type of long life protection, it is important to properly prep the car. Clay, scratch / swirl removal etc before you apply the kit you choose.

Personally if you do choose this route i would go for a diamond brite kit. However i think the best way to protect your cars finish, is through regular washing, followed by a good sealant such as Klasse topped of with a good carnauba.

My normal car care routine is wash once a week using Autogym shampoo stuff. Once a year I Autoglym Super Resin Polish followed by the Extra Gloss stuff afterwards.

I'm taking all this on board and hope to have a weather window to be able to do the whole works.

Everyone has their routine, but with winter coming up mine was to give the new wheels a thorough wash (Meguairs Gold Class) and clean the paint with Car-Lack and apply a coat of Collinite wax - beads like hell and just needs a weekly wash.

I'm very sceptical of these paint sealant treatments, I'm sure they do work, I'm simply not sure they are worth the money compared to doing a weekly 2 bucket wash and using a few decent products to keep your car in top condition.
