Can you get a kicking if you're caught speeding by an unmarked car? Heard a rumour going around that you can't relating to this whole "you have to be able to see speed cameras" stuff...

Just wondering if anyone knows the whole story and this rumour is true.

nope thats one of the points about unmarked's

they "sometimes" goad you into racing, ahem.....

yes ppl ahve been pulled and charged,

unmarked cars have calibrated speedos just like the "real ones" before video etc, the coppers judged your speed by theres

so there ya go

Yes indeed, a mate of mine got done like this. A big merc of some descrption went roaring past after a bike, my mate followed in his WRX. Turned out to be an unmarked car, they took the easy option of doing the car behind rather than the bike (which they probably couldn't catch), and the rest is history. 3 points for speeding rather then major serious grief for racing though.

Why could your mate have been done for racing? Pulling out and making progress at the same rate as the car in front can't possibly be taken as racing.

Afraid so. The one and only time ( touch wood ) I've been done for speeding was an unmarked Vauxhall equipped with Speed check ( glorified stop watch ).

All unmarked enforcement cars carry and are fitted with 'autovision' linked into VASCAR.
If you are caught by enforcement cars, then usually you are really caught.

Just because a car happens to pass you at high speed, why would it be in order for you to do so yourself?
If you see someone stick his head in a fire, would you do so as well?

But shouldn't police chaps be setting a good example? Maybe he thought well if it's ok for a police car who has no lights flashing so is obviously not on an emergency, it must be ok for me

I overtook a big brand new green BMW 535 at about 95 when I looked to my left and straight at a uniformed police chap. To be honest I did think it was strange that a BMW was not in his assigned lane so should really have known I was then committed so had to hold my speed and overtake, at which point I pulled infront and got followed all the way to my junction while he waited for me to make a mistake. Luckily I didn't

I now take care whenever I see a big new posh car because the trend seems to be luxury unmarked traffic cars at the moment!

Maybe he knew why the Police chaps were exceeding the limit. He had some sort of premonition as to what job they were actually doing at the time that gave them the authority to break the limit Blue lights can often hamper progress because people do stupid things when they see them, like panic because they are exceeding the limit themselves and brake hard.

Or should all unmarked vehicles set a good example and stick to the limits getting the target response time increased to an absolute maximum.

" Sorry we were another 15 minutes getting here, we were setting a good example to everyone in our unmarked car"

Maybe they were even checking the speed of the motorcycle and thought, "Theres a cheeky bugger behind, he will do instead" Done it myself on many occasions

dazren, sorry, I probably wan't clear earlier....

Scene was 40mph limit dual carrageway. Bike last, police unmarked merc in the middle, my mate in wrx first. All speeding a bit but nothing excessive. Bike goes for it big time, merc follows (no lights or siren), my mate follows behind the merc. They get up to 80-ish, my mate hassling the merc a bit (probably quite a lot, knowing him). Blue lights come on, my mate gets stopped and well and truly boll*cked, told he was lucky not be done for racing + gets a (fairly generous IMHO) 3 points.

As far as I know the bike got away, I think the boys in blue went for the easy meat.

I agree that sometimes it's better to not use lights an siren on unmarked cars, but they do use 'tactics' to try and catch you too often. Much like a beat officer walking up to someone, hurling a load of insults, then charging them with assault when they get smacked for it.

Stop rolling your eyes so much. I was only joshing matey, I don't actually believe what I said.

Indeed I have had an unmarked merc behind me who obviously had somewhere he had to be but didn't want the world knowing. When we got to about 100 (just making progress, not booting it) he gave me a quick flash of the grille blues. My heart stopped for a second as I pulled over and started to slow. It started again though when he just wanted to pass me. That was a relief

I have been making progress....discretely and in front of the police and never been stopped. I never push my luck but it seems if you are driving sensibly they'll leave you alone

a rover 25 & myself (in the mini) were following a police bike at a distance of approx 300-500 metres for 30 miles down the A1 on saturday at well over the limit..... It seems if you give them respect they respect you.

My golden rule with coppers is "EAT DIRT" and they will usually be all right.
