Jumped in the car earlier, fired it up, pulled away and within 2 minutes its started juddering when accelerating. Now it doesn't accelerate at all. Barely got the car home, now I'm waiting for the AA.

My first thought was Misfire. It feels like the car is only running on 3 cylinders. But now I'm thinking maybe its more than that. Car starts and ticks over with a dead spot (which made me think Misfire) but could it be more than spark plug/injector/lead and maybe a Head Gasket or even valves or something?

My 2.0 is booked into the main dealer on Thursday cos i have no power, very reluctant to rev etc. Started out as a flatspot at 3000 rpm now might as well walk. I put new plugs and a new air filter and then tried the air mass meter from my dads car and still no change. Conveniently it's just out of Ford warrenty so luckily they should make a nice profit.

Chris

Well the AA Man has been and fixed it clap WooHoo bounce

As soon as he got misfire on his screen he thought it was the Coil, and thats exactly what it turned out to be! 10 minutes later it was running beautifully.

Mine was like that, lumpy idle, no acceleration. Try changing the coil. According to the AA man, its becoming Quite a common problem on Fords. The AA charged me £70 for a new. You could probably double that for a Main Dealer. One thing I would say though, stop driving it. If it is your coil you'll be filling the Cat with unburnt fuel which will cost you a new Cat as well!

Great.

Is coil east to change cos as i say dad has 1.8 litre version of same car, could trial swap befroe it goes into main stealer. It's been like this for a few weeks now and to be honest i havn't noticed a drop in fuel consumption.

Yeah, coil is an easy fix. If I'd known what it was I could have done it myself. On my Engine the coil is on the right. Sounds silly, but follow the plug leads. 4 torx screws, 4 plug leads and another plug on the side takes it out, putting it in is the reverse. Mine is a 1.6, dont know if the 1.8 or 2.0 litre are any different.

Part was £70 from the AA, It wasn't a Ford Part.

Just had a look, 1.6 is the newer version of the Zetec, known as Zetec S-E, 2.0 and 1.8 is older engine. My coil is in the same position as yours thought (Use to have a 1.6). Best thing is when i opened the bonnet i decided to have a look under the car, seems i have a rusted sump and a nice oil leak to sort. Not bad for a 3 year old car with less than 50k on the clock.

To date all 4 of my cars have been Fords (Fiesta, Escort and 2 Foci) This is the last i'll buy, no wonder ford are in the s**t at the moment.

Chris

The Zetec SE is actually a completely different engine to the Zetec. IIRC the former was designed with Mazda or Yamaha or someone like that?

Developed with Yamaha, by far the superior motor, shame you could only get the 1.6 version in the Mk 1 Focus, my 2.0 is as course as old slyle school loo roll.
