Windows MP, Real Player, Winamp and Divx are all refusing to play my mpeg files, only Quicktime will play them

All highly frustrating and I can see no reason for it. All 3 are the most up to date versions, and I've done nothing new to the computer in recent times.

Error messages are as follows:

Windows Media player said:
C00D11CD: Unknown error
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to Windows Media Player.

Error ID = 0xC00D11CD, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Winamp said:
Nothing - just sit's refusing to start file

Realplayer said:
A general error has occured. "Unspecified error"

Divx said:
Error opening file. Failed to open file. Please check that it is a valid AVI or MPEG-4 file

These messages occur with any MPEG file, which have all played happily up until recently.

Any suggestions as to a fix, I don't think it's codec related as they have all played many times before.

Cheers

Phil

Edited to add: Win XP Home is my OS

Download and try VLC (Video Lan Client), it can play MPEG1 and MPEG2 movies quite happily, I belive it can even work around unfixed SVCD encodes as well. Or at the very least watching it strugle and spit out a screen full of technicolour blocks lets you know the file is well and truly fubar.
