before I smash the thing to pieces?!
The Mrs has just bought 2 nano's and a 30gb ipod. I've plugged the nano into the usb and logged into itunes. However, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. The instructions on the box tell me to follow the "setup assistant". I haven't got a set-up assistant! I've looked around the support area of the website, and nothing helps. I've tried to download the latest version ofr itunes(7.1)but nothing happens. The screen goes blank for a bit, then returns to it's usual state.
I might just smash it up, I'd feel better!

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Been a while since I got my iPod but don't you have to install some extra software that came with your iPod?

Piccie of my iTunes 7.1 with my ipod bolted on to it.

When you connect the ipod does anything happy in the Devices area? It might be that you need to restore the ipods to factory if they are brand new out of the box as they could be HPFS formatted and not FAT32 (thus Windows will have a massive fit), although I thought all new ipods were fat32 formatted these days by default *shrug*.

Na, didn't get any software. Since the 12th September, you "do it" all from their website.
I'll try resetting it and see what happens, but I ain't holding my breath....this always happens to me, I've got a Sat Nav system sitting in the box cause I can't use it! Best put the ipods in ther garage as well.

I take it you're using a PC (Windows based machine) ?
Seem to remember there is an order to doing things.

Getting the USB set-up can be a bit tricky,
I've found Firewire connections work pretty well and transfers are very fast.
IF you have Firewire connectors ( they also go by the number 1394)

Some people get it working straight away while it takes others ages.
(Because PC's by nature come with many different components and software/drivers installed)

If you're using a PC, don't bother with iTunes. Get Ephpod instead.

Do you have a new-ish PC with USB 2 ports? If not, the PC might not power them correctly.

Generally, if you get iTunes working and then plug in the iPod, it should recognise it.

Thank for your replies. Yeah, the pc is pretty new, and has various usb ports, and it does recognise the ipod. It's just itunes that doesn't seem to work. I'll try an alternative...it's driving me mental.

Thanks again.

Is it just one of the Nano's?

Sounds like a common issue with new iPods, they sometimes need to be plugged into the computer for up to 20 minutes to be recognised. Used to see this a lot.

If they are new and this doesn't fix it, call Apple, with the serial numbers, and they should be able to resolve it.

Someone has suggested it might be a pop-up blocker thats stopping me from downloading it, and that I should remove them......any idea how I'm supposed to do this??!!

Cheers.

You'll see if the site is being blocked as most blockers record them in some way. When I install the missus Nano I had to install additional drivers for iTunes to recognise it.
