Best value vmax car?
Discussion
Depends on your VMaxing goals.
If it's to turn up, enjoy the company, ogle the fast cars and eat rat-burger then you can do it with a small budget < 10k will see you mid-150s with some style to boot.
If you want to hit mid-table (mid-160s) then it'll cost you some wedge.
170+ and I suspect you'd struggle to do it for less than 20k (base car + mods or a 170+ car).
To hit 190+ then I'd suspect you need to be spending 40k+ from both a power and safety aspect (it's one thing to get to 190 and another entirely to stop before you become scenery!!!).

Indeed - if you are looking for VMax trueness, then its a bit more difficult.
If you just want something everyone will laugh at and secretly wish they were driving, then mine would be a good start... £1650, 121mph, and sideways all day long.

TurboT's Supra (which sold for 23k) acheived 181mph in 1.1miles at Elvington.
The cheapest way is to buy a already modified car.
Very true - much less fun though

17 year old 7k car + 37k mods, with around 900bhp & 210 in 1.41miles PB, so I guess 45k could win you Vmax, although im not sure that less can. As regards safety

Here we go again
It's not about the effing winning! ... the question was, what do people consider to be the best VALUE V.Max car.
Quite right, VMax is more about taking part and pushing yourself to your own personal limits. Or just turning up and enjoying the company. In 3 Vmax's I've gone from turning up to pushing myself. Not to beat anyone but just to 'do better'.

Although most of us I'm sure have our own friendly little game of 'one-up-manship'- myself and gavinR certainly have a laugh trying to beat eachother.
I totally agree its about car/clock but some will have a chance of going Fastest thats because they have a better Power/weight ratio nothing more, For me it would be another chance to do what the car was designed for but not under a fully competitve environment.
Please dont dismiss my comments because im competative, its why I built a fast car. This is a Performance car site I believe so I assume thats why many are here.

Excuse me if I'm wrong but I thought the top speed of a car was governed by power and drag/air resistance?
The Elise/Exige type cars have equal or better power/weigth ratios but can't keep up above 140ish...
Was at the last Vmax great fun watching the Carrera GT and all the mega Porsche 911s had 3 runs in my old boat (525iSE) worth all of £500 and got
132/134/and then 138mph and was sideways around most of the bends I laughed myself silly doing it!
Now planning the next one but with a new car probably an e34 M5 which can be sourced for about £4 to £5 and should crack 150mph+
Cant wait I cant remember a friendlier bunch of people and must thank everyone for their encouragement

I reckon one of the old V12 6 litre Merc's would be good value.
From 91, they're pushing 400 bhp. Without the restrictor, I'm sure I read that they're good for 180. Don't know if that's true or not.
Less than £4k for a low mileage example aswell.

Russ, having driven a less than 4K 600SEC, it struggled to get above 100mph, never mind 180.... From 91, they're pushing 400 bhp. Without the restrictor, I'm sure I read that they're good for 180. Don't know if that's true or not.

Neglect is the killer in these cars. My money is with an E34 M5....
I think you'd be surprised at how slow even that type of venerable dowager would be at a V-Max.
As I told you earlier, it is unlikley to be any fleeter of toupee than yon Merc McEwing: indeed, until very high revs, you will be as, if not more, emphatically golf club bound.
Back to the wiring, there's a good chap.
