Insurance: love it or lothe it - ya gotta have it. But what are your experiences?

How much did Comprehensive cover cost you?
Who did you insure with?
What were they like to deal with?
Would you reccomend them?
Was it agreed value / limited mileage / breakdown included?

Answers on a postcard - or on here would be great.

Ta.

Hi Bob,

I heard of a company by way of recommendation on here and thought I'd give 'em a go.

So, for a 99 Chim 500, 3k miles a year, 2nd car, clean license, 35 yrs old, agreed value £12.5k, fully comp including madam on the policy...... wait for it..... £243! Unbe-bleedin-lievable! bow

For a 96 400 Chim circa £8k would have been £203. The chaps on the phone were knowledgable about the cars, and sounded very helpful and professional. Better than the bods on the HPI line when I phoned for a check - "Yes Sir, a TVR Chimaera? Is that a motorhome?" - f*&*ing gibbons!

Hagerty for me as well - 98 Chim 450, 3k miles, garaged, second car, 33 years old with the missus insured as well - £253 including breakdown cover!!

Cannot recommend them highly enough. They will also allow you to up the mileage through the year if you need it at the original differential in rate i.e. £40 odd quid for another 1,000 miles...

Also Hagerty for me.

In the first place it was a pleasure to speak to someone who knew about the cars and loved them.

30 years, 4yrs NCB, fully comp, 4k limited miles, 29yr old better half, 5.0Litre, £380 odd, or, as I like to think of it, about half what I paid to insure the Elise last year.

All of the companies on my Chimaera Insurance page have been recommended by someone.

Let me know if you find any others.

Just insured my 400 Chim thru Mannings (Allianz - Cornhill the actual company)
For unlimited mileage, business class 1, spouse included, track day cover, £250 vol excess, full protected NCB on my other cars and mirrored on the TVR, in Southampton = £371.

An extra £110 quoted if no garage (makes it worthwhile buying a shed to empty your garage!!) and an extra £55 for breakdown cover.

It's the unlimited mileage bit I especially like, had the car 2 weeks and already done 1000 miles!

I tried Haggerty about 5 minytes ago and thought I'd found a bargain at £311, BUT it's only 3k miles a year.
I do around 10 so it'd be no use for me. Was told the most they'll cover is 5k PA.

Best I've had this year is £550 with A-plan - 400 chim, 30 years old, 4 yrs NCB and 3 pts.

Thanks again for all the recommendations, I try to help fellow PHers so mention you saw us on here to any of the guys and girls on the phone and they will give you a discount.
To insure with us at the best premium, your car needs to be garaged overnight, your TVR is second use car (i.e. weekend toy!!) and does less than 5000 miles a year. We do 3000, 4000 and 5000 mileage options.
Regards Moosetvr aka Darren @ Hagerty

Crikey that's cheap, I thought I was doing alright getting mine under £700 this year!

Know where to look next year now, don't I???

I should add that I'm 26 and that probably goes some way to explaining why insurance companies try it on... but the car is a weekend toy - my daily driver is the polar opposite, a 2-litre auto omega estate with a serious oil drinking problem! - and the TVR does less than 5k a year (averaging about 10 miles a week with the amount of work I've got on at the moment, boo hiss), kept on a driveway with a cat 3 steering lock and I've fingers crossed at renewal next year I'll have a decade's NCB so hopefully will be able to shave a few quid off...

Guess I'm too used to paying modified car insurance on my past motors, my old 200sx cost me £1200 one year - I was 20 at the time though!

I insured my '99 Chim 500 with Virgin. About £500 with 10K mileage per year and I think £300 excess. I thought that was really good value myself. My last company wanted £700 with 6K mileage and £750 Excess.

98 Chim 450
10 years private full NCB, but accident last year on company insurance.

Around £650 for 8k miles, and £750 excess, so I am paranoid about parking it.
Insured with Direct Line, who made me the very generous discount of £7 over the year when I shifted to a garage from a drive.

Couldn't find better through InsureSupermarket, but having spoken to a few fellow owners since and seen threads like this on PH, I'd like a better deal.

Not so. Only needed for limited mileage policies, but their unlimited policies are such good value that this isn't too much of a problem for me.

Mannings also gave me a discount for being a member of the IAM and for having done a RideDrive course, a further discount for being a member of the IAM, were happy to put Class 1 Business use on and did not insist on the car being garaged as already mentioned.
