Mystery Wiring

Had the dash off at the weekend to sort out a separate issue. However, I came across a couple of bits of curious wiring.
1) There is a thin ribbon of braided steel running along the back of the dash - any ideas.
2) Behind the speedo/rev counter there are two wires (tied together) one green the other brown and white that are
not connected to anything. Again, any ideas please. More interested to know what these are though.

thin braided steel sounds like an earthing strap of some kind - if its attached, leave it alone!

Didn't plan on doing anything. Just interested to know what it is.
