Definative Clarification on CUP 1's and CUP 2's
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I'm in the process of replacing my Sports Classics on my '97 993 C4 with original Cup 2 wheels, and I'm finding this topic a minefield.
Through trawling the Web, I believe I now know the visible difference between cup 1s and cup 2s, but not the technical difference, and not only between these wheels, but others that are marketed as original Porshce wheels at a fraction the price of new ones from Porsche, when new wheels from Porsche are around £500 ea plus vat!!
I'm given to believe that originals will have either 7J or 9J stamped next to the valve stem. I'm also given to believe that originals are signifcantly lighter than other non-originals. I gather that some wheels where approved by Porsche, but made elsewhere eg: Milia Migna (I think).
I deduce that the Cups were the 'standard' default wheel supplied by Porsche. However, Porsche also sold other wheels as optional, and these where made by someone else etc.
I've prattled enough...can anybody clear some of this up for me or point me somewhere.
Colin

Original 17" Cup 1 and Cup 2 wheels will have the size and offset stamped next to the valve stem. Fronts for a 993 are usually stamped 7J 55 and rears 9J 55.
Cup 1s are more angular and normally fitted to 964s. Cup 2s more rounded and normally fitted to 993s. Not necessary standard fitment but rather an option when new.
On the back of the wheel you will find the part numbers stamped if original.
7J 55 Cup 1 965.362.124.00 or 01
9J 55 Cup 1 965.362.128.00 or 01
7J 55 Cup 2 993.362.124.00
9J 55 Cup 2 993.362.128.00
They are both light and not expensive so worth going for originals IMHO. Cup 2s suit the 993 as they are more rounded like the 993. Cup 1s look better on 964s.

there are also replica versions of these knocking about, particularly with Cup 1's, be careful when buying especially from Ebay. Cup 2's were also known as design 93's
Do a search on the www.rennlist.com forums, lots of pictures and good information on there.
oh yeah, if you find any decent cup 1's, give me a shout!
cheers
