Does the burger on the main page look like it was shot with a snoot, barn doors, or praps a single flash - from 40 degrees or so? And is there any reason why I shouldnt be able to achieve a similar kind of lighting with flash and a light tent, a black mat blackground and a softbox (or brolly - Id guess the softbox would be best?)

Ive never tried shooting with only one light, I dont think a one light shot would look right on white anyway, certainly not inside a light tent - I dont have any dark card to test with until I buy some next month. If anyone has any suggestions or comments Id be keen to hear them.

That's been shot with more than one light.. There are reflections on the RHS which would not have came from the source light unless reflected.

How would you set up a similar scene if you had a brolly, softbox, and light tent. Or wouldnt you?

The BK bun looks a bit dry IMO.

I think your original burger is one of the best on the first page of SS results, certainly better than the one that looks like a turd in a bun with some dodgy green lighting.

Theres no accounting for taste is there...

Its a pity you used two bun 'tops' for your burger and not a 'top' & 'bottom' hehe

Hope you don't mind but I had a little play with your burger, so to speak. Could it be you're just chasing a technicaly superb shot rather than one just presented in a flashy way?

Thats really good. I did exactly the same thing myself last night, with the only fire photo I have, but it didnt turn out as nicely as yours. Im enjoying the chasing - stock shots give me specific goals to work towards, I like the planning side of things as much as the shooting. So yes, Im still after a better burger shot paperbag

Rob,

I've had this for a while - can't even remember where I came by it..

ARRI Lighting Guide 1.2Mb

Shows setup's and sample photos.. The one on the lightmeter (page 18) is an example of how the BK burger was shot I believe..

Don't know if anyone would find this interesting..

Thanks for the link. The more I read about lighting the more I realise how little I know. The same is true of most things in life, I suppose.

as you can see from the shape of the reflection in the tomato it was shot with a medium softbox to the left of the burger as the main light.
There's also either a reflectr or fill light to the right of the burger, and probably an accent light shining on top of it

the lighting was 2 soft lights from the left hand side, the forward most one slightly higher than the back one. on the left from behind was a hard box or the like.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Im going to try shooting on a non white background next time, and will experiment with my lights a little more.
