Language settings on XP

I have Windows XP Pro on my desktop and laptop. When using the spell checker on Word and Outlook, the default language keeps dropping back to English (US). I have tried the usual 'Set default language' but this never lasts. I am told this is a problem with XP.
Is this correct and has any found a fix please?

Make sure the "Detect language automatically" checkbox is turned off. Doing this and accepting all the warnings about changing to English (U.K.) worked for me.

Admitidly in O2k3, but it should be a goodun for OXP.

Thanks for that. It seems to have worked on Word but I cannot find the box to uncheck on Outlook Express. Any ideas please?
