996 GT3 MkI vs 964RS
Discussion
Dear Porsche enthousiasts,
I have a little dilemma...before getting mad reading the title, I did perform a search on the subject, but I couldn't find an good answer on this question. Most of you would remark that I need to compare the 964RS to the 996GT3RS, but I compare them based on their value (their pretty even-matched in Belgium, GT3-RS is almost twice the price).
We owned a 996 convertible (lovely car of my girlfriend) and a Carrera 3.2 afterwards (I bought that one because I wanted to know the feeling of a "classic" 911. I just sold it a month ago, because I'm in for some "more" (faster, brighter, more exclusive). The 911 wouldn't be used for tracking most of the time, but mainly clubbing and on Sundays. We both adore the 964RS in Rubystone and the GT3 in Speedyellow. Which of both cars is the nicest to drive? Which one of both is more exciting? I read that they are both great performers, but I think the RS will be tiring on long journeys, specially in summer.
How can you compare these 2 cars to 993TT? Would you choose the 993TT above GT3/RS or vice-versa?
All info welcome:-)
thnx...

OK, Can't resist!
964RS gives you seat of the pants driving experience with no power steering. Ideal for track use but I tour around Europe too in it. Actually good for luggage but bad if there are low kerbs around. ie. France!
GT3 is more a GT. Very comfortable on long trips and more power but more detached for the driver. Interior is a different league. Even has radios and A/C. On the track it is arguably quicker than the RS but does not quite have the driver appeal(from my viewpoint).
Values are similar for Mk1 GT3 and LwtRS. Clubsport RS is more like GT3 mk2 prices.
Hope that helps as I am being as subjective as possible and not in the usual wind up GT3 drivers mode!
That makes a change I can hear some people say!

[puts popcorn down for one moment]
The 964RS is a bit like a go-kart. If you don't mind driving a go-kart on the road and having go-kart levels of refinement/noise/vibration/harshness, then go for it.
If you want the homologation car Porsche created to go racing again AND enough refinement for the occasional long journey (eg, A/C), one of the most capable cars on track bar none, bags of character, and probably the best powerplant Porsche have yet made, then the GT3 should be your choice.

I do concur with Charles. I would make sure that my priorities are sorted before buying one or the other. As a track-day biased sort of user, I went for 964 RSs... But then, to me, even the 993 RS felt remote compared to the 964 RS. Honestly, I went to Tom Schmidt to buy a 993 RS, test drove a few of the nice ones that he had on offer (even the price was reasonable back then!) and I came back with another 964 RS.
Try them all and then decide!

OK thanks already for the answers...
What about the value? Will GT3 MkI's depreciate still a lot? Not easy to guess, I know...
What about a 993TT? Good choice or not compared to an RS/GT3? I think you guys would opt for the latter, isn't it? Pure driving, great throttle-response, super handling and RWD offer the best Porsche-feeling...??!!

996 GT3 Mk1 for sure.
If you're not going to track it why not have something that is bearable to drive in summer (with A/C) has a much nicer interior and is generally refined enough to use regualrly with all the thrills you require available on demand.
A plus point is the fact that if you suddenly DO decide to track your car, you'll be faster than the '64 too!

gt3 no question for the road, i have had two, always been tempted by 964RS, driven a few but on the road IMHO quite difficult, but track only
enjoyment, maybe different answer.
gt3 in reality covers everything, amazing sounding engine, great looks ( in the MK1 ! ) rarity, low depreication, and AC for the trip to le mans and south of france !

2 completely different, great, cars. gt3 you'll keep for a few years and love, 964rs you'll want to keep forever. ive never met an ex-964rs owner who doesnt want their old one back.
my first impressions of 964rs and it just gets better and better;

Does not look like the 964RS will depreciate much. I remember the days when I could buy one for just around 20K pounds (lightweight) and a clubsport for around 25K (and a cup for 18K, but then no one wanted them!) Look at prices now!
Unlikely that we will see such increase (or potential of increase) with the GT3s. They just made too many of them overall (I know, I know, the mk1 is the exception) and they are still making them, compressing residual values.
But then, if I had to drive to Southern France (and go around les Gorges du Verdon) with a 964 RS, I would rather choose a GT3, or even a 993 turbo, or my Audi A8!

I think I will go for the RS...it's in the south of France and will take the TGV and a bag full of dollars:-)...If it's a good one I'll take it home immediately! I've seen the car already at Spa earlier this year.
Buying a good RS isn't an easy thing...GT3's can be found in good shape for years from now still...

I own a MK1 GT3 but fully agree with Charles' comments above.
I track my car all the time, but keep on being amazed how fast a 964RS is too. I used to think 964 RS are ugly, particularly in rubystone, now I think they are fab-looking. In fact, I would love to buy a 964RS in rubystone as well.
When I bought the GT3, I hesitated for a long time between a 964 RS anda GT3 and I'm embarassed to say, but it is the extras like A/C that made me chose a GT3. The MK1 GT3, costing barely more than a nice 964 RS is a bargain. Last year I drove it to Le Mans in the morning on a very hot day, with A/C and music on, tracked it at Le Mans all afternoon in the racer group and next morning again, and drove back Brussels in the afternoon for a dinner that night. For that, the GT3 is supreme.
I doubt if 964RS prices will ever decline. GT3 prices may decline a bit further, but I cannot imagine them falling under 964 RS levels. Each generation of 911 has one iconic car : for the 70s it was the 2.7 RS (eventhough the 3.0 RS was a better car), in the 90s it has become the 964 RS (eventhough the 993 RS was a better car) and I think for the 996 the iconic one may well be the MK1 GT3 (eventhough the MK2 and RS were clearly better cars, but derivatives). All this is subjective though.

A wise choice
64RS can be a bit of a handful if driven quickly on bumpy B roads, suspension set up can be adjusted to help, many european cars seem to have an autobahn nose down and very low alignment...adjust with room for the shocks to actually move or even fit 93RS front struts if you intend to use it for mostly road driving...running costs should be less than GT3 and if you work out it is not for you and want to try the GT car, it's not as if there aren't enough to choose from on the secondhand market.

As a child I always dreamed of an RS in Marine Blue and I found Rubystone really ugly too...but now I prefer RrrrubySssstone(=RS) too...it looks fabulous...Turkisch Blue is also great, but not very common.
I reserved the car till Saturday...31000 km, 313bhp, full history...I placed a deposith of 1000 euro to block it. At 47500 euro a fair offer I suppose!

Very good price for the mileage. Have they fitted a hot film and chipped it to get 313bhp?
Was the car at the Spa Francorchamps Fun Days in May? If so I probably have it on video when I passed it!
Check it has original Magnesium wheels and they are in good condition. They tend to crack at the rear inner edges due to weight of the engine and camber. Especially if the car has been tracked, which most have.
Good luck with the purchase and see you at Spa in May!

yes it was there with the Porsche days in May...but there were many Rubystone RS's there...yes it's chipped, hotfilm don't know...cat by pass and cup exhaust as well. The car has been tracked for a small part of it's life and not on the magnesiums (they still have the original tires on it!!), so I doubt they would have cracked but I'll check!
