On the way home I was passing a 30mph speed camera and took a look at the speedo to check. I was quite surprised to see an indicated 120mph! Needless to say the speedo was somewhat 'out'. A bit further up the road I managed an indicated 200mph, which must be an unusual event - even in a 2.5 GTO The speedo was jumping about 120 - 200 - 120 - 200, then after 5 mins it seemed to settle back to normal. Apart from the fact that there's a better than even's chance it knackered - any bright ideas?

Hey there humpy,

Mine has done this a few times over roughly 4 months of ownership. It seems to occur after I've washed the car extensively, I think its pressure washing under the wheel arches that does it. I'm pretty sure the sensor is round about that area. Usually after things dry out it works again fine. This could be complete superstition or plain shit but anyway thought I'd offer what I knew!

speedo sensor is located on the passenger front wheel, its most likely that which is causing the problem.

Sensor might be on top of the gearbox in yours mate, the older ones were atop the diff. Although it does sound like the wet wheel problem yes

Thought only 6 speed cars have the sensor in the front wheel hub, 5 speed cars have the sensor in the gearbox l think.

Owen is right, on the five speed it is on the gearbox...I would check the wiring as a bad/loose conection can do this, also remember when it is registering 200mph the miles are going on at that speed!! Mine had this problem on the way back from the owners day at Rockingham in 2004, and the 100 mile odd trip home put nearly 1500 miles on the clock.
